Two manholes on St. Stephen Street in the Fenway exploded and began belching smoke around 10 a.m.

The first to go was an Eversource manhole behind 115 St. Stephen St. near Opera Place around 10 a.m. About 20 minutes later, a second manhole exploded outside 97 St. Stephen St., at Jarvis Place.

Shamus Moynihan reported: "Several loud bangs and lots of smoke."

The Huntington News reports Northeastern shut dining halls in two nearby buildings and urged students to avoid the area - or if they were already inside to stay there.

Eversource reported five businesses or homes without power in the area around 11 a.m.

On a typical weekday morning there is a decent amount of foot traffic on St Stephens.
