Update: Suspect arrested.
Boston Police report they are looking for a guy who's held up two smoke shops in the Back Bay this week while claiming to have a gun.
The guy walked into the Blue Moon Smoke Shop, 470 Commonwealth Ave. in the Fenway around 5 p.m. on Wednesday, claimed he had a gun and made off with several packs of cigarettes and several hundred dollars in cash. He pulled the same stunt around 9:15 p.m. on Thursday at the Blue Moon Smoke Shop, 324 Newbury St. in the Back Bay, police say.
The suspect is described in both incidents as a white male, thin build, about 40-50 years of age, wearing a blue winter hat, black reading glasses, a green zippered coat, light beige pants, and gray sneakers. He was also carrying a large gray travel bag. The suspect fled towards Boylston Street in both incidents. The suspect stated that he had a firearm, but no weapon was shown.
If he looks familiar, contact detectives at 617-343-5619 or the anonymous tip line by calling 800-494-TIPS or by texting TIP to CRIME (27463).

55-65 seems more likely, Unless the guy has battled cancer or has a serious substance abuse issue.

Ever see those progressive mug shot galleries of meth addicts? Where they age 50 years over the course of few years of arrests?

Sad, but not uncommon after a couple of decades of hard living.

Doing this repeatedly, with his face on camera, for such a tiny haul makes zero sense even for a drug addict. The risk/reward ratio just isn't there. Best I can come up with is maybe the guy needed cash fast to pay off a mob debt and fears the law less than the mob? Outside that, maybe a manic episode or other mental illness manifesting? Or am I underestimating the baseline rate at which basically healthy people randomly commit stupid pointless crimes?

I'm picturing two 75-year-old Italian American guys sitting across the street in a 97 Lincoln Towncar waiting for their cash.

I doubt it. Not if he’s been smoking for as many years as he looks like he has.

So this is what you meant when you said you were going out for a pack of cigarettes and never came back...
