Brad in Lower Allston reports that New England Comics alerted customers tonight it's closing its store at 316 Harvard St. in Brookline on March 21 after 35 years in business there.
Unfortunately, this has become necessary due to rising costs and declining sales.
The chain closed its Harvard Square store last year and its Allston location in 2015. It still has stores in Malden, Norwood, Quincy and Brockton.

Magoo got some action from a super hot comic book gal in that store back in the day. That super hot comic book girl is now Mrs. Magoo. Magoo.

I worked for NEC back in the 80s, starting in the original Allston location and eventually all but running the Malden location one summer. I have way too many books to prove it, and yeah, those long boxes all made the move with me to Florida. I listened to far too many a middle-aged guy peering at the books up on the wall and lamenting how their Mom tossed those away when they went to college to get rid of mine, but I think I'm getting old waiting for the back-issue market to recover...
(Oh, and no, I'm not Mrs. Magoo... ;) )

re: the Malden store - I hope you weren't running it any time in the last 5 years. Every time I've gone into that store I feel like I'm walking into a stereotype. It radiates Comic Book Guy energy and is just an unpleasant store to be in. I'm amazed it stays open - even back when I was a subscriptions girl, I made the trek out to Comicazi rather than transfer my list to NECMalden.

I ran the Coolidge store for several years in the mid 90s, worked in Malden, Harvard Square and Quincy. At the Coolidge store I met people that have become my best friends and remain so to this day. Good times there. Unfortunately, the inevitability of retail locations closing has become reality. Good luck to all the remaining stores!

I do not collect comics. But I know many who do... and even I know New England Comics is the best place in the area to get comics.
This is a sad day indeed for Comic collectors in the area.

Comicazi in Davis Square is another great one, with a huge toy selection as well as comics.

If the idea of getting to Worcester isn't horrifying (which, I get), there's a store called That's Entertainment that is huge, well-stocked, and has wonderful people working there. It was my go-to place as a youth, and it's stayed strong for years.

Another establishment store you could recommend. I never officially worked there, but I did help build it! (No idea if that’s a selling point or not…) But if you’re looking for Manga, check it out!

is the ideal situation. Really, 5 years is too long for a small business to exist. Now , we can finally get the overpriced Kangaroo milk burrito joint we didn't know we needed.

I was just there today with my son. Bummer.
FYI, another comic book store opened up stairs and we went there too, in all honesty it was pretty epic, very cool lots of collectibles, we were kinda blown away!!! Friar Tuck I think…
One closes, another opens!
