
A correspondent reports from the banks of Leverett Pond this morning:
There are a bunch of Clean Harbors harbors trucks there today, as well as what looks like a new oil sheen on the water (and very strong odor). One of the workers told me they're going to send a scuba diver Into the tunnel to continue trying to find the source. They are also going to replace one of the booms He said they know it's heating oil and not automotive oil because it has a red dye in it.
The tunnel is the drainage outflow pipe that runs by the Brook House that poured oil into the pond, part of the Muddy River, in December, coating ducks and geese, killing some of them.
Brookline officials never publicly identified the source of the oil in the pipe; the Brook House, which had been identified as a source for past spills, said it wasn't them this time because they've removed their oil storage tanks.
