Wilson's snipe along the Charles River

Mary Ellen watched a pair of Wilson's snipes along some fast moving water at Millennium Park in West Roxbury today:

I don't get it; If snipes are real why is a "Snipe Hunt" considered going on a wild goose chase?

Do they taste terrible or something? Squab is delicious even if they are baby sky rats. They look about the same size as squab. Are they like impossible to catch?

Snipes are supposed to be very hard to hunt, requiring extraordinary skill.

That's why the military began referring to exceptionally good marksmen as "snipers".

For several seconds before I saw the bird.

When I looked at it on my phone, I could not make out a bird at all. It looked like a pile of bones from an Alien movie. Even on my computer, it took a while to see a bird.

At which to meet accidentally. Probably doesn't need to borrow a pen, either.
