City councilors voted unanimously today to support the trans community in Boston and across the country on Sunday's Transgender Day of Visibility.
"We stand on the shoulders of many, many great LGBTQ activists and trans and non-binary demonstrators" in working toward a world where people can just be who they are, City Councilor Liz Breadon (Allston/Brighton), one of the sponsors of the resolution, said.
Breadon noted that the leaders of the 1969 Stonewall riot that helped start the modern push towards LGBTQ rights were transgender. She said that a park in the new Allston Yards development off Guest Street will be named for Rita Hester, whose still unsolved murder in 1998 led to a separate Transgender Day of Remembrance in the fall.
