They can rename it whatever they want, nobody will call it that. May I remind that in 2014 South Station was officially renamed The Governor Michael S. Dukakis Transportation Center. When was the last time you heard it called that by anybody? When was the FIRST time you heard it called that by anybody? Crickets.

Logan Airport
This is a bad idea.General Logan served his country andCommonwealth admirably. If he were a known racist, sure, remove the name. Find another location for a Russell naming nice statue on City Hall of Russell by the way.
General Logan
General Logan was not a war hero. He did reorganize the Mass National Guard in the 1920s and was a staunch advocate for the American Legion and the interests of WWI veterans, but he was primarily a local politician whose influence never reached beyond Boston. Bill Russell, on the other hand, represented the best of Boston to the nation and the world. Renaming the airport in his honor would be a fitting tribute.
Logan Airport
General Edward L. Logan served in the Spanish-American War and commanded troops in combat in Europe in WWI. He was a strong advocate for veterans during his political career. He also served as the head of the American Legion in Massachusetts, as well as the head of the National Guard association nationwide.
It's a bad idea to rename the airport after anyone. This man served honorably and deserves the recognition that has been bestowed on him.
The author of the article insults the memory of General Logan with his smarmy, arrogant comment about naming a Dunkin after him instead. What a clown.
Honor Bill Russell in another way. Perhaps name North Station after him. Leave Edward Logan's legacy alone.

I'm with the proposal of honoring Bill Russell with another honor other than renaming Logan Airport, especially where General Logan did quite a lot of work for veterans.
Perhaps the writer of that article should have left well enough alone and not added that snotty, arrogant, dismissive comment about taking Logan's name away so you can seem socially hip. You don't elevate one person by punching down another, especially for your by-line. And credit goes to Bill Russell's daughter, who said that this discussion should be for another time.
Rename the Garden instead

Pay tribute to true heroic history - rename it TRUMP BUNKER HILL AIRPORT.
After all, if Paul Revere and his Raiders hadn't broken the blockade and liberated the airport, Crispus Attucks and the 617th Airborne wouldn't have been able to take off in time, we'd have lost the battle of Trenton, and we'd all speaking Hessisch right now!!!

I hardly think it is an honor to rename a dysfunctional place helmed by arrogant hacks (regardless of administration) that will all be underwater soon.
There are certainly more appropriate places to dedicate in Russell's honor.

Don't come to the airport boozed up and angry and remember to tip your TSA attendant - they are keeping you safe.
Aren't sports stars idolized and paid enough?
Sure, Bill Russell was a good guy but at the end of the day he was blessed with natural talent and the height to play professional basketball for millions of dollars.
The contrast with Ted Williams is that Williams was a Marine fighter pilot in wartime.
Give Russell's memory or that of another sports figure a street, school, or square. Airport too big an honor. Sure, Logan may or may not deserve it either but he's got historic squatters' rights.
I'm against changing names of places once given in honor of someone. Sets a bad precedent. In time Russell's memory will have faded too, and will the name of the airport be changed again in 2068 to that of a person who died in 2065?
If you wanted to go in that direction, better to name the airport after someone who gave years of selfless service, say Ted Landsmark or Rev. Eugene Rivers.

I agree that honors and recognition should not be withdrawn because of the person being less remembered over time or the opportunity to honor somebody else or God forbid sell naming rights.
However, if you think that Bill Russell made "millions of dollars" in his playing career, you are out of your mind.
He didn't do that in a season.
He didn't even do that in his career.
His total pay for his playing career was probably somewhere between a million dollars and 1.5 million dollars.
He also made some money at the coaching and executive level.

in that NBA salaries were low compared to now. He made the top salary in the NBA in 1966 at $100,001 - one dollar higher than Wilt Chamberlain.
That would be almost a million dollars in 2024 dollars.
Generally, he did make millions in 2024 dollars but not close to what I thought.
