Entangled-whale update: Experts not immediately concerned about whale's health, but will try to find him
Provincetown's Center for Coastal Studies reports a crew dispatched to Stellwagen Bank Saturday was unable to find Enso the humpback whale - reported by people on a whale-watching cruise on Saturday to have fishing line wrapped around its tail - but says they are not concerned about the whale's health immediately.
The center's Scott Landry said this morning:
We are likely to search for the whale later today once the squalls pass. We are not concerned about the health of the whale over the short term since he can breathe and swim perfectly well. Over the long term however, the whale could develop complications.
Also just want to clarify that we have no reason to believe the whale is caught in marine debris. On the contrary, the rope on the whale is more likely to be from fishing gear, which is common in our region.

Help
Can someone translate marine nerd for me?
"marine debris" vs. "fishing gear"
That clarification really doesn't help...
JAY!!
WE GOTTA CALL THE AQUARIUM!!
Maggie, call Aquaman!
Maggie, call Aquaman!
“Immediate” versus “Long-run”
I see almost two full wraps of rope, one fully around the notch and a full/partial oblique wrap of one of the rope’s termina* across the fluke. How long is the rest of the rope and what’s it attached to?
Not in immediate danger means they don’t see a mechanism for a tourniquet injury?
*My bad I can’t see the end of the proximally situated rope. 08262024, 16:12.
Are you really second
Are you really second-guessing marine biologists based on one photo on a news blog?
Yyyes??? When you put it
Yyyes??? (Attempting to affect genuine sheepishness) When you put it that way…. When something is asserted without a, “because,” I’m inclined to ask qvestions.
(More truthfully, I’m inclined to credulity, but everyday I exercise asking “why.”)
