It's been awhile since a driver took out something large near Jamaica Pond

Knocked over stone wall across from Jamaica Pond

On the morning of Aug. 18, a motorist who probably wasn't going at all fast, no sir, slammed into the long stone wall that runs along Pond Street between Prince and Eliot streets, across from the southern end of Jamaica Pond.

Before taking out part of the way, the driver gouged out some grass and taking out part of a tree, as shown in these photos by one of the nearby residents who chronicles the impact of motorists.

Damaged turf, tree

The one saving grace: Although the car had to be towed away, the driver did not appear seriously injured.

In 2006, residents raised funds, which were later matched by DCR, to repair the historic stone wall.

Considering the confusion of the roadways in that area I'm surprised it lasted that long. I take it the driver was not a resident, or maybe DUI?

I'm sure it can't possibly be their fault! The GPS said to turn there! It was dark and they have tinted windows. It was too bright and they couldn't see and can't be expected to slow down. They have problems staying between the lanes because they are soooo narrow.

Etc.

It's probably what you suggest, or some form of distracted driving. That said, this particular stretch of Pond St. is not well lit and it's pretty hard to see the curb along that strip. It would not be too hard for somebody to hit the curb, go up over it and in to the wall, simply because visibility is terrible on this street (and many other Boston locations).

And why they have user-controllable accelerator pedals.

Nothing in Boston is truly dark, lol. Drivers make too many excuses for their bad habits and poor skills.

I'm guessing that you've never been on the Arborway or J-Way when there were leaves on the trees. Streetlights might as well not be there.

If you are too dumb or blind to drive in the dark then don’t drive.

Runs through "The Grove" in West Roxbury. It's an unpaved dirt/gravel road on top of a large rock outcropping. I'm not even sure if vehicles can get in there. Not any street lights at all; If the residents don't have any lights on it gets pitch black. I doubt there have been many if any vehicle 'accidents' there.

Seriously. Nothing in Boston gets fully dark. The sky glows with light.

Lacking street lights or heavy vegetation != dark.

I've driven through there quite a bit at night. I've also biked that stretch at night - I had no trouble seeing but I think there are a lot of people in the area who need to up their driving game or give it up. There isn't any need to turn on your high beams and blast out the world there.

Dark by Boston Standards, perhaps, but that's like saying Charlestown is dark by Times Square or Tokyo standards. If you lay off the accelerator or just give your eyes a little time to adjust there is plenty of light.

The lighting isn't great, but it's also a spot where three different merges all converge and diverge, and most of the time at least a third of the drivers moving through don't appear to know which lane to be in.

This happened during daylight hours, around 10:45am.

Imagine how much more pleasant and safe Jamaica Pond would be if they closed the Jamaicaway to cars and all the drivers and their incessant noise screwed off.

How would you get there to relax @Kinopio?

And combinations thereof. It's not exactly remote and it was built when most people did not even have cars.

...and where you'd put them if only, gosh, you could remove them all from your very own planet which is only for your approved uses.
