The Globe discovers Fontaine's is gone

Also, that gay people live in West Roxbury! Sarah Schweitzer's look at changing West Roxbury actually isn't all that bad (did I just say that?) - at least, for people who have paid absolutely no attention to West Roxbury in the past five years, like, oh, the Globe. Also? The "unlaced Converse tennis shoes and chunky glasses" New York arriviste crowd at the local Starbucks is still vastly outnumbered by the fully laced sneakers and Sox hats crowd at the local Dunkin' Donuts. So don't worry, traditionalists: The big neighborhood event is still the annual Little League parade.

punched my monitor when I was reading this, it was just a condescending article. Fontaine's was our most famous landmark? How about, oh you know, St. Theresa of Avila's, or Roxbury Latin, or CM?

"Where outsiders saw dull, residents saw continuity and comfort."

Yes, how foolish of us to desire continuity and comfort as opposed to getting trashed by hipsters who will be gone once their lease runs out.

"Center Street - once a strip of pizza joints and Irish pubs - is now a hub of ethnic restaurants including Lebanese, Greek, and Italian offerings."

DeNo's, Espresso, A & N, Christo's, the Corrib, and the West Roxbury Pub might have something to say about that. Anyway, the Lebanese place was previously Samia's, which had been there for years. Lazy reporting.

I do believe that Maura Shurtleff, quoted in the article, is wife of the illustrious Hal Shurtleff, long-time vexed newspaper letter-writer and John Birch Society activist. I'm glad that little tidbit didn't make it into the piece, the sarcastic comment that would be sure to follow about our stodgy, parochial ways would make me hari-kari.

Because God forbid that people desire continuity and appreciate their traditions.

There was a porn shop (sorry adult entertainment boutique)in West Roxbury once.

It was kitty-corner from St. T's (next to the L'il Peach or whatever they call it now) and I think it had been open about a month before it was firebombed and that was the end of that.

And now, the adult store in Dedham is closed, so what's a sex fiend to do? Oh, right, drive up to Gary's Liquors and pick up a copy of the Phoenix.

And now, the adult store in Dedham is closed,

Not closed, just around the corner. When the town tried to block them from moving to the other side of the same building, they sued, and the town settled.

Now if we only had a good tittie bar...

Now I'll have to go find it (strictly in the interests of research, of course).

I can only hope it's on Mah Way, if only so I can sing "I did it Mah Way" as I drive by .

Was it firebombed, or is that hyperbole? I remember that whole controversy, Msgr. Helmick didn't get a wink of sleep the whole week or so that place was open. I don't remember any firebombing.

I thought Helmick had a great point, anyway. Students from Roxbury Latin and St. T's and the kids from CM who beat them up all go to Li'l Peach after school. There was just no reason to have that there.

So maybe not a Molotov cocktail, but ...

Then again, maybe my memory is going, so if I'm wrong, somebody please correct me!

it wasn't firebombed or cocktail. someone poured buckets of paint all over the front of the place

They whitewashed it, whoever "they" were. Dumped white paint all over the front.

Since then, Lil Peach expanded into that space. Now there are just two units in that retail building, Lil Peach and Laundry.

Has there ever been a firebombing in West Roxbury? City of Boston? (Movie making doesn't count.)

but it was set ablaze. An accelerant was squirted through the mail slot, which was located on the front entrance, and ignited. The fire caused minimal damage, as it only ignited the rug before the BFD broke in and extinguished it. (Lil Peach was open LATE back then, if you recall, so the fire dept. was called quickly.)

The front of the store was also vandalized with paint at one point, but the fire assault occurred also. Both incidents happened towards the end of this place's existence.

I heard that the Town of Dedham is allowing an "adult store" to move into Legacy Place.....so they can "keep an eye on it"....uh-huh.

You heard wrong. As a result of a lawsuit by the Amazing porny shop, the town has had to dump their ridiculous fraud of an adult zoning district - sitting on wetlands bordering Readville - and move it. The least offensive choice to the town was the area adjoining Legacy Place off Route 1, and along the railroad tracks near Route 128. The owners of Legacy Place asked that part of the district be put on their property, so that they could restrict any adult use themeselves. The town has to allow adult businesses to operate somewhere, but landlords have no responsibility to rent to adult businesses.

that the Globe is now 90% written in New York, by interns from NYU who write these local pieces using Google Street View and imagination.

She normally writes about the travails of Duxbury residents who summer on Nantucket, but every so often she slums in the city. You may recall her epic expose on breeders with babies in the South End.

Doing an outdated, touristy piece on West Rox is the least they could do after killing City Weekly and cutting loose most of the freelancers who actually bothered to get to know the neighborhoods they covered. Yep, it's the least the Globe could do. Hey, that could be their new slogan:

The Boston Globe: It's the least we could do.

Schweitzer = Hack.

I'd read the Globe again if they would get rid of her.
