Struggle with man with knife ends with man subdued, cop on way to hospital for exposure to pepper spray

Stanley Staco reports a man with a knife on the Comm. Ave. mall did not want to surrender himself to police. He continued to struggle even after cuffed and police sprayed him with pepper spray to get him to stop. He did, around 9:45 p.m., but one officer needed a trip to the hospital after he got sprayed as well.

Haven't legions of anons told us to both pack pepper spray and not worry about blowback, because it doesn't happen, and suggesting that it could injure the person spraying it is simply ridiculous?

we should all just beg for mercy and cower. Run away if we can. Wouldn't want to hurt the person(s) assaulting and robbing you.

Sarcasm off.

Anything can go wrong, including blow back from pepper spray. Life is risky, it's a small risk to take.

getting away, if one can, is the more sober strategy.

But, heck, if you want to play Chuck Norris, go for it.

No sarcasm.

Easier to run away from someone that is distracted by a strong burning sensation and partially blinded than not. Which is the point of pepper spray. It buys you some time to RUUUUUUUUUUUUUUN!

This was an officer getting sprayed by another officer, and the injuries are minimum for your standard spray if used at a safe distance.

And a reminder that carrying pepper spray - and using it - carries a hazard to the person carrying it and non-target people around them.

And that such risks are not even "small risks" to take, given that these are trained professionals.

These guys weren't even in a tunnel, either.

I suppose the anon brigade has the "special" pepper spray that distinguishes between good guys and bad guys.

I was happy to hear that I could pick up a canister without a permit in MA (finally) but then thought the better. Spraying is tricky (i.e. accuracy) and blow back is a very real issue. Thoughts of trying to fend off a very angry attacker while blinded convinced me to rethink.

Yeah, the cop should have used a u-lock in accordance with your expert recommendations on here. Not sure why they go through the academy when they could learn so much by just listening to people like you.

How often a cop's day can turn shit*y in a hurry. They deserve critique when warrented, but acknowledgement of the crap they go through and risks they take, too.

A bit of Pepper spray isn't that big of a deal (hospital?), but it's not a lot of fun, and he had to deal with the guy with the knife, first...
