Police: Three arrested on gun charges after one aimed both SUV and a gun at cops in chase along Gallivan Boulevard

Boston Police report arresting three men on gun charges after a wild chase down Gallivan Boulevard Thursday afternoon.

Police say officers were out looking for a particular guy with outstanding gun warrants shortly before 4 p.m. when they spotted him leave 28 Woodruff Way and get into a Ford Explorer. They followed the SUV as it went down Gallivan towards Neponset.

The vehicle initially stopped in the McDonald's parking lot at the corner of Gallivan Blvd and Granite Avenue. As officers activated their emergency lights and siren and began to exit their vehicles, the suspects sped from the parking lot nearly striking the officers, who had to jump out of the path of the suspects’ vehicle. Officers pursued the vehicle as it swerved and maneuvered with no regard for ongoing traffic and subsequently knocking over a traffic signal pole at the intersection of Gallivan Blvd. and Adams Street. The vehicle finally came to a stop in the middle of the street in front of 930 Washington Street and all three occupants jumped from the vehicle and fled on foot.

Police say the driver, Daniel Murphy-Wilkins, 30, of Roxbury, ran up Washington to Codman Hill Avenue, with officers in pursuit and yelling "Boston Police Stop!"

During this foot pursuit, suspect Murphy-Wilkins turned towards the officers with a firearm in his hand and pointed it directly at the officers. Officers caught up with Murphy-Wilkins and a violent struggle ensued ending with the suspect in custody and his firearm recovered. A loaded silver colored Smith & Wesson .38 was taken from the suspect.

Other officers were able to round up Tony Evans, 24, of Mattapan - the guy the cops were initially after - and Tony Harris, 25, of Everett, police say, adding that after their arrests, police retraced their pursuit and found "a Jimenez Arms 9MM with a large capacity magazine attached."

Murphy-Wilkins was charged with refusal to submitm, assault by means of a dangerous weapon - the SUV - malicious destruction of property, assault by means of a dangerous weapon - gun - unlawful possession of a firearm, carrying a loaded firearm on a public way, unlawful possession of ammunition and resisting arrest. He had bail set at $150,000 at his arraignment in Dorchester Municipal Court, the Suffolk County District Attorney's office reports.

Harris was charged with unlawful possession of a firearm, carrying a loaded firearm on a public way, unlawful possession of ammunition, possession of a large-capacity feeding device and being a level-3 armed career criminal. He had bail set at $100,000, the DA's office says.

Evans was charged with resisting arrest, unlawful possession of ammunition, possession of a large-capacity feeding device and being a level-3 armed career criminal. He had bail set at $100,000, the DA's office says.

Innocent, etc.

No baiting attempts, please.

Great restraint on the part of officers could have ended tragically

Incredible job by the officers. This could have easily ended up so much worse for these suspects, and it would have been completely justified.

I sincerely hope that is not lost on them as they sit in jail tonight, alive.

Once again, Boston Police demonstrate incredible restraint in dealing with having guns pointed at them.

In many or most parts of the country, one of more of these guys would have been shot dead without even being told to stop first.

And what exactly do you find wrong with shooting a thug pointing a loaded gun at a cop? That would have sent a clear message about the consequences of such action, what kind of message did BPD send? Point a gun at a cop, beat the crap out of him after he catches up to you and tries to arrest you, and you'll be out on $500 bail ($50 cash needed on the spot) in a day or two?

Bail was set at a slightly higher level than $50 in this case.

Why would anon (not verified) bother to read the whole article? Obviously he understands bail better than you, what with the fleeing being indicitative of a reticence to answer to authority and the attacking law enforcement as a sign of dangerousness.

very nice about such low bail .. Now we aren't holding people accountable. This is not a victory for anyone

As I like to remind people, the default for bail is "personal recognizance."

On the one hand, we are not talking murder here. On the other hand, yeah, he fled a traffic stop (sign of flight risk) and pointed a gun at a cop (sign of risk to the public.)

Lastly, accountability is what happens if the suspects are found guilty.

I don't mind it when people gripe about the criminal justice system. It's the ignorance that kills me.

What is wrong with it is that police officers are there to bring people to justice, not to replace judge, jury and executioner when there are alternatives.

These officers used their training to do their job - which is bring these criminals in for the courts to handle. That's the American Way. Why do you have a problem with that?

They also have families to go home do. It's not a matter of bypassing the courts; it's stopping an immediate threat to your life. The kind of people who aim guns at cops have nothing left to lose (see: level 3 armed career criminal). While the amount of restraint shown is admirable, it'd be hard to criticize them for rightfully acting in self-defense.

See the Dookhran case, the final report on which was issued just this week.

But thankfully Boston police officers are trained to shoot only as a last resort, so if nothing else, the odds of innocent bystanders getting shot is dramatically reduced.
