Gunfire that injured child was second gun incident in area yesterday; in first, cop tackled man with loaded gun

Boston Police report officers responding to a report of gunfire on Warren Street near Copeland Street early Sunday found themselves confronted with a guy who pulled out a gun as he ran away and refused to drop it.

Later that night, a young boy was shot in a hail of gunfire on Copeland Street near Warren.

Police say officers were responding to one report of gunfire around 1:30 a.m. when they heard what sounded like another shot outside 44 Kensington Park - across Warren from Copeland

Officers responded and observed two males leaving the scene. When officers attempted to stop them, one of the males grabbed his waistband and fled on foot. One officer gave chase, giving verbal commands to stop. As the suspect approached 22 Fenno Street, the officer gave commands to show his hands and attempted to apprehend the suspect, however, the suspect broke free and fled. As the officer again pursued, he observed the suspect pull a silver revolver from his waistband. The officer ordered the suspect to drop the gun to no avail. The officer was finally able to tackle the suspect against a car causing the firearm to fall from his hand. The suspect continued to fight the officers, putting his hands toward his body to avoid being handcuffed. After a violent struggle, officers were able to place the suspect into custody.

Police say Tarell Wheeler, 24, of Roxbury, was charged with unlawful possession of a firearm, unlawful possession of ammunition and unlawfully carrying a loaded firearm. He was also charged with possession of crack for the two plastic bags apparently containing crack that officers found on him during a frisk, police say, adding he was also charged with receiving stolen property and resisting arrest.
