Angry man with a loaded gun boards a T bus in Mattapan Square, police say

Boston Police report arresting a man they say had a loaded gun ready to fire in his backpack on an MBTA bus rumbling up Blue Hill Avenue from Mattapan Square yesterday afternoon.

Police say Dawan Johnson, 45, of Dorchester, "racked a round into the chamber" in an attempt to come out on top in an argument in Mattapan Square, then, having allegedly made his point, boarded a bus bound for Nubian Square, shortly after 5 p.m.

Officers, alerted to his gun-enabled presence on the bus, stopped the bus:

The officers removed the suspect from the bus and recovered a loaded 9mm pistol from the suspects backpack. The firearm was later discovered to contain 3 live rounds of ammunition in the magazine and 1 live round in the chamber.

He was charged with illegal possession of a firearm, illegal possession of ammunition, illegal possession of a loaded firearm and assault with a dangerous weapon - firearm - police say.

Innocent, etc.

To have to board a bus or a train looking for a man with a loaded firearm takes a special kind of courage. The MBTA bus driver should be applauded for his grace under extreme pressure keeping his passengers safe.

If he was wearing a Patriots jersey and on his way to Logan does that make a difference? I'm assuming the charges will be dropped with alacrity.

I wonder if the cops came in guns drawn like they did when I was on the number 28 from Morton Street and the bus stopped at Talbot Avenue? I'll tell you what, the barrel of a .38 looks like a cannon when a cop sticks it in your face, starts waving it around, and asks "Where's the gun?".
