Man was speeding down Columbia Road with a gun, cops stopped him, he took off again, then got out and tried to run away, police say

Boston Police report arresting a Somerville man they say proved unable to avoid capture even after speeding away from a traffic stop, abandoning his car and then running away - leaving behind the loaded gun, fentanyl, crack and regular old cocaine he tried to ditch Thursday evening.

Police say officers on patrol spotted a driver zooming through the intersection of Columbia Road and Quincy Street around 9 p.m. on Thursday. They turned on their blues and the driver slowed to a stop several blocks away, at Bird Street, but just after one officer got to his window and asked for his license and registration, he sped away, police say.

Officers were able to locate the vehicle in the area of 16 Baker Avenue, unoccupied, and still actively running.

Officers broadcasted a description of the suspect, and responding officers began to canvass the area. Members of the Youth Violence Strike Force located the suspect in the area of Cedar Place. Officers continued to search the flight path of the suspect, and recovered a firearm and a large plastic bag believed to be containing drugs.

The firearm was later determined to be a Diamondback firearm with six rounds in the magazine. The drugs were later determined to be Fentanyl with a weight of 11 grams, cocaine, and crack cocaine. Officers also seized $1,259 in US currency.

Nathaniel Wallace-Gomes, 24, of Somerville, was charged with illegal possession of a firearm, illegal possession of ammunition, trafficking of class A drugs, four counts of possession of Class B drugs with intent to distribute, driving with a suspended license, reckless operation and refusal to submit to a police officer, police say.

At his arraignment Friday in Roxbury Municipal Court, Judge David Weingarten ordered him held without bail pending a dangerousness hearing on Tuesday, court records show.
