Five shot in Franklin Park

Five people were shot in the the area of Circuit Drive between Pierpont Road and the golf clubhouse tonight.

Police, already on hand in the park for the annual Dominican festival, which was scheduled to run until 10 p.m., reported shots around 8:42 p.m. and then more shots fired about two minutes later.

At least one of the victims was a teen or younger. One person was shot in the arm.

WCVB reports none of the injuries were considered life threatening.

I hope this event never occurs again. The people it attracts have no respect for the neighborhood. The amount of noise and dangerous driving coming from the Dominican festival all weekend long is out of control. This mass shooting should be a surprise to no one. I have similar thoughts about the Saint Patrick’s day parade, but at least that only lasts a few hours and most people don’t drive to it.

Doesn’t have shootings, a lot of fights.

One you’re allowed to drink at, the other you get handed a $500 ticket.

Not the same.

For the most part, this is a family friendly day. They just need to end it earlier and apply the same rules at the other.

You also want to ban the Gay Pride parade as well, right? All those bike lanes closed off for the day. All that loud music, right? People disrupting the normal rhythms of neighborhoods.

You don’t want cars, you don’t like noise, perhaps you should go live on an island.

Also, why should a mass shooting be a surprise?

Sounds like you are a racist prick.

Actually, your inclusion of the St. Patrick’s Day Parade just means you are an anti-Irish American POS. Go back to Weston weenie boy.

The assholes who think St Patrick’s day is an excuse to come to Sourhie, get drunk and disorderly, piss and puke on people’s houses, start fights, trash property…. What makes anyone think they’re majority Irish American, or could even find Ireland on a map?

Being sick of the mess that St Patricks day had become for the people living in Southie is in no way, shape, or form anti-Irish. Surely the victims are more heavily Irish than the perpetrators.

He's an RCRB - Racist Cyclist Rich Boy.

There's a vitriol there that upsets his little rich boy world so like the spoiled child that he is and he lashes out.

Would you allow this comment if Lee said you were a Hebe?

Just checking on the level of bias allowed here on ethnic attacks.

Thank you!

But leprechaun? That's just stupid, hardly rises to the level of the other word, which, I would agree, would be the same as the slur that sure slipped off your typing fingers pretty fast.

up
Voting closed 35

It does rise to the same level because the twerp is trying to disparage someone using their ethnicity and further below is mocking religion.

It may not look like much to you, but it does to me.

You made your point, such as it is, you don't have to pile on.

If someone says "that kid is a cute little leprechaun. It's a complement.

"What a sad little leprechaun." It's a slur. I think you can figure it out.

Intent is important. It is an attempt to disparage based on some supposed ethic characteristic.

I think Lee's subsequent post about Lucky Charms confirms his intent.

As a lifelong ESL student, I appreciate the explanations and context regarding insult grades and appropriateness -hebe, RCRB, leprechaun etc. :)

Hey Adam,

"other blarney."

Does UHUB have any standards on ethnic taunting?

Let’s talk about your “DOMINICAN SNIPER UNIT”.

Which Dominicans are you riled up about?

Grow up. Don't worry - you'll always be mommy's special boy if you can manage to act like a real man, not a predictable grievance box who thinks stereotypical explosive anger is appropriately manly and not just a toddler's tantrum.

Your fake persecution complex is laughable.

to denigrate someone because of their ethnicity or religion.

To Adam's point, there are many ethnic references used previously that are now deemed offensive. Many humorous plays on ethnicity/religion/sexuality are not viewed as funny anymore.

We all need to learn a bit more.

I don't think it unreasonable to call out the drunken bullshit that happens every year in March when someone is calling to shut down other festivals for drunken bullshit. But since the "special untouchable" festival happens to be "Eirsatz themed" then somehow all comparisons are an ethnic slur to the perpetual victim in question.

Then we get the pile on because this particular poster seems to think that his problems are because of persecution of the Irish, rather than look in the mirror.

It is being used as an ethnic slur.

Got it.

Good.

And you are lecturing about stereotypes?

…. John Boy’s street, he would be gnashing his teeth and ripping to shreds his lace curtains handmade by trafficked nuns in the priest’s harems.

Heaven forbid they close his street to on street parking the day of. Do not touch his broken beach chair space saver.

If they made the street his church is on pedestrian only for a day, the Holy Archbishop himself would not be able to exorcise his demons.

It would all somehow be anti Irish in his mind.

Their post may be a little over the top but the sentiment is not that far off. Certain festivals seem to invite way more violence than others. I do not recall the pride festival ever having the issues that seem to plague the festivals being complained about. Even Saint Patrick's day seems more of slobbering drunks causing minor chaos. There are some festivals that for one reason or another seem to attract way more violence. Maybe it is time for the organizers and communities to self police more?

When I have gone there has been good food, music, dancing, games for kids, great food, lots fun and , did i say great food.

It was a success again yesterday until, . . . . .

… I felt both ways about it.
I really enjoyed it during the day. But at night it was disturbing. I didn’t even live near enough to be woken up by it. I sympathized with those who did. It should be shut down by 9pm, though this shooting did occur just before nine. But good luck getting police to do that.

up
Voting closed 35

Bit of a difference. But it is definitely unpleasant for people who live in the neighborhood to have all those drunks breeze in for the day.

… was canceled due to the police road blocks. Due to lack of good public transportation to the zoo, this was probably necessary.

What a disappointment for many.

up

Six bus routes stop at the Zoo. Sorry it's not light rail, gondolas, or Amtrak - but that's actually decent public transportation service.

Weekend service is limited. Depending on where you’re coming from, it can require transfers and long waits between them.
I’m not excusing drivers but that part of the city has long been deprived of the level of service more affluent sections are given.

up
Voting closed 8

Would bus service to the largest city parks (and "Jewel" of the Emerald Necklace) be considered decent. Any city with actual public transit would have at least one, if not more, train lines directly servicing it.

up
Voting closed 10

Adam, you were the only media source I saw that was clear about WHERE in the park this happened. I say it described as the "outskirts" of Franklin Park, among other descriptors. It's a small thing, but the detail and Boston-specificity you bring is always appreciated.
