Gunpoint carjacking near Jackson Square T stop; suspect caught in manhunt in Roslindale woods
UPDATED Thursday with new information from BPD.
Boston Police report a carjacking near the Jackson Square T stop ended with a manhunt on Amtrak tracks and in woods along the Hyde Park/Roslindale line.
Orlando Pizzaro, 34, of Brockton, is charged with stealing an occupied car around 4:05 p.m. at Centre and Lamartine streets:
[He] approached the passenger in the car and asked for a cigarette. According to the victim, when the passenger reached into his pocket to get a cigarette, the suspect produced a firearm, pointed it at the passenger and ordered both occupants out of the car.
The car was last seen turning onto Washington. Not long after, officers on patrol spotted the white Civic heading south on Hyde Park Avenue, near Metropolitan Avenue - and the house where two people were murdered on Tuesday.. Police say when the officers pulled the car over, near Serino's, Pizzaro ran.
Pursued by officers, he ran onto Providence Street near the Amtrak and commuter-rail tracks. And then he ran across the tracks into the woods on the Roslindale side.
Train service was halted as police officers flooded the area to look for him. Shortly before 5 p.m., after he made it across the woods to Austin Street - and following a brief struggle - officers took him into custody, police say.
He was charged with armed carjacking, assault with intent to murder, unlawful possession of a firearm and possession with intent to distribute a Class A drug.
Innocent, etc.

Yikes
Thanks for keeping us informed. I can't find any news about this anywhere else and the police are screaming up and down Washington St and Hyde Park Ave and have been for hours.
Thanks, Adam
We saw two BPD cruisers and a Statie fly up West St. in HP then take tow different rights towards the woods at about 4:45 -- I was dying to find out what happened.
Ditto on Thanks
Adam,
Thanks for keeping us posted on breaking news in our neighborhoods. Can always count on UH!
Copters hovering over my side of Met Ave. Nice to know why and nice to hear that BPD and the doggie got their man!
Astonishing, that a carjacking at Stony Brook T stop, by 2 armed men, who bail near HPA double homicide scene, stopping commuter rail, so police can chase l, resulting in terrific arrest is not touted by BPD. Kudos to BPD, State Police, and K-9 doggie! You all rock. Terrific teamwork by all. Including UH for its reporting.
But, where are we? What goes on in HP, stays in HP.
Ran across the railroad tracks ?
How did he do that? Aren't there high fences on both sides of the railroad right-of-way? Acela trains zip through there.
Fences can be easily cut through
Especially there; wouldn't surprise me at all if there were already large gaps in the fences the guy (and then the cops chasing him) could get through.
There just aren't a lot of eyes on that stretch of track. On the Roslindale side, it's pretty much just woods, at least until you get near Metropolitan Avenue, where the pedestrian bridge is and the houses start (in fact, the guy seems to have made it across the woods to Austin Street). On the Hyde Park side, Providence Street is a relatively low-use remnant of Hyde Park's industrial past - the last time I was actually down there (four years ago), there were a couple of machine-shop type places, a taxi yard and a collapsing abandoned industrial building.
If I were frantically running away from the cops
the last thing I'd want to do is stop to cut through a fence ... if I was even carrying wirecutters at all.
No, I don't think he cut through the fences himself
I'm thinking there were already holes cut in the fence, because it's a fairly desolate stretch where somebody could easily get away with cutting holes there and when an opportunity like that presents itself, somebody will cut holes through the fence.
And this guy just availed himself of that. BPD officers broadcast the chase pretty much as it happened - they basically ran after him from Hyde Park Avenue, into some backyards, onto Providence Street and then across the tracks, where he (briefly) disappeared into the woods. Given that the police were right behind him, no, he didn't have time to cut through fences.
Residential district on one
Residential district on one side, retail stores on the other side. Guaranteed to be a cut through a fence.
I actually don't remember their being a fence there.
I question the fence, too
It's been a while, but my recollection is that there is no fence between the tracks and the industrial lots along Providence St. At least, not a consistent fence.
[edit]
Just confirmed with street view, no fence, at least on the section I checked.

Collapsing industrial
Collapsing industrial building indeed! My train goes by the backside of that building (at least I think it's that building), and in the last few weeks I've noticed that in one of the large window openings that was filled in with cinderblocks, the cinderblock wall has started leaning in rather alarmingly.
Of course, if there's no one using the building, I guess it doesn't matter...
No holes in the fences (unless they fixed them)
But as you can see, they don't look particularly difficult to scale, especially with the Jersey barriers (and an equally high berm or something right behind them) on the Hyde Park side. The Roslindale side fencing looked to be the same height and some flimsy construction.
The guy is incredibly lucky. About 30 seconds after I took the photo below, a Boston-bound Acela came through. I didn't hear it at all until it was basically right on top of me.
Smart
There was a huge event in front of SB on the grass at that time yesterday, hundreds of kids and lots of cops and staties. And these geniuses pull this stunt a block away.
Car Jacking location?
The headline says Stony Brook, the police report says Green Street, but the description states the car was stolen near Centre and Lamartine, which is near Jackson Square...
Scary stuff, regardless of where it started.
Yes, that would be Jackson Square
Sorry for the confused post. The actual carjacking was one place, the victims found police at another, and yesterday on the scanner, they were mentioning a third.
Fixed.
Bad or you.
[He] approached the passenger in the car and asked for a cigarette.
See what smoking will get you.
