2017 elections

In a city that thinks of itself sometimes as the Athens of America, surely we can have a real debate, where two candidates for a particular office can actually talk out issues.

That wasn't what we got tonight. The format of the "debate" between Marty Walsh and Tito Jackson at Hibernian Hall in Roxbury left no room for the candidates to really get into things. Only for one brief moment did they break out of the confines of the forum-style session, when they exchanged a couple of angry barbs over last year's Black Lives Matter at Boston Latin imbroglio. At an at-large city-council forum at the Roxbury ABCD tonight, activist Jamarhl Crawford was not having any of Pat Payaso's clowning around. Latoya Gayle videoed Crawford going after him - and Payaso's explanation for why Roxbury residents should take a guy dressed like him seriously.

Both Marty Walsh and Tito Jackson pulled out of a debate planned for Channel 4 tonight because of a contract tiff between the station and union members over pay for longtime workers, the Globe reports. The union, an IBEW local, had planned a picket line.

At a forum tonight, Mayor Marty Walsh said he would spend the next four years building on what he said were the successes of his first term, while challenger and City Councilor Tito Jackson said he would take more aggressive steps to make Boston a better place. Read more.

All eight of the candidates running for at-large seats on the Boston City Council expressed reservations about the idea of Amazon building its second headquarters in Boston - with or without tax subsidies - at a forum in Roslindale tonight. Read more.

The Walsh campaign says Hizzona has agreed to debate challenger Tito Jackson twice - once with Dan Rea on WBZ on Oct. 10 and once with Braude and Eagan on WGBH on Oct. 24. No times announced; Jackson says he's looking at other debate invitations.

David Bernstein writes that the interesting news in last night's results were not in the race for mayor - which surprised no one - but in the council races, which could mean two black women joining the council in January - possibly alongside incumbent minority councilors Ayanna Pressley and Michelle Wu (at large) and Andrea Campbell (Dorchester). Mayor Marty Walsh will face off against City Councilor Tito Jackson in the November elections, according to preliminary results from the city elections department. Jackson will his work cut out for him: Walsh is leading by a better than 2-1 margin. Read more.

Kerry O'Brien shows us that the owners of a prominent totem on Robert Street in Roslindale are backing Walsh on Tuesday, while Amanda B says she'll take an actual pupper for Jackson any day.

Barring some amazing thing in Tuesday's preliminary, the two will go on to battle for the mayor's seat in the November final elections.

The three candidates for the District 1 City Council seat (North End, Charlestown, East Boston) that Sal LaMattina is giving up sounded similar themes on a number of issues, including Airbnb and 4 a.m. closing times, at a forum sponsored by the North End Waterfront Neighborhood Council tonight. This is the week for candidate forums in the council districts with enough candidates to warrant Sept. 26 preliminary elections. Here's a list of the forums for the races in District 1 (North End, East Boston, Charlestown), District 2 (Chinatown, South Boston, South End, downtown), District 7 (Roxbury) and District 9 (Allston/Brighton).

Going forward, I'll be updating the list with additional forums and events for the fall city elections.

Mary Berninger reports on an East Boston focused candidate forum the other night for the three candidates for the District 1 seat Sal LaMattina is giving up - Lydia Edwards, Margaret Farmer and Stephen Passacantilli

Two of the three will be selected in the September preliminaries to compete in the November final election for the two-year seat, which also represents Charlestown and the North End.

Roy Owens, who runs for a different office every year, this year is running for the District 7 City Council seat Tito Jackson is giving up to run for mayor. And he's come out with both guns blazing against teaching anal sex to kindergarteners, which is a position none of the other 12 candidates for the seat have publicly taken, probably because, oh, come on, seriously now?
