The Herald reports that Geoff Diehl made the assertion during a debate with two other candidates who will also not be our next US senator, doubled down in the face of skepticism from both a moderator and his rivals, then, possibly realizing what that made him sound like, said he was just joshing.

Who sent out this text poll?

Dave Shea reports he got this message on his phone yesterday, wonders who's behind the poll on the 4th Suffolk race for the seat vacated by Nick Collins when he moved up to the state senate.

Both candidates in the Sept. 4 primary - Matt Rusteika and David Biele - said it wasn't them. Rusteika notes he doesn't call himself "Matthew."

CommonWealth takes a look at the race for the Democratic nomination for Suffolk County District Attorney - and efforts by some in the black community to get some of the candidates to drop out, which is leading to the same sort of backlash that happened with a similar effort in the crowded race for mayor in 2013.

Progressive West Roxbury/Roslindale isn't endorsing any candidates in the 14th Suffolk state-rep race (Hyde Park, Roslindale and West Roxbury), because neither of the progressive candidates - Gretchen Van Ness and Segun Idowu - were able to get the required 60% of the vote at a recent endorsement meeting. Hilarity ensued this morning when Fox & Friends thought they'd booked a pro-ICE Democratic candidate for Congress in Arizona, only they got Barbara L'Italien, a Democratic candidate in our 3rd district who opposes putting children in cages and ripping toddlers from their parents.

Sanchez and Elugardo

State Rep. Jeffrey Sanchez (D-15th Suffolk) and challenger Nika Elugardo agreed on more than they disagreed on, at a candidate forum in Jamaica Plain last night.

Instead, the two battled over who was the most progressive - and how to fight for progressive values - in one of the state's most progressive districts, which includes parts of Jamaica Plain, Mission Hill, Roslindale and Brookline, in a room at the First Baptist Church that was so packed people were turned away at the door. The Supreme Judicial Court today upheld a state law that blocks people from registering to vote in the 20 days before an election - but dropped a hint to the Legislature that, hey, you guys could change this if you want, before adding, it's OK if you don't want to. Read more.

Ed Lyons posts a copy of a fundraising note by noted homophobe and, thanks to nearly 600 Republican delegates, a candidate for governor, at least until Sept. 4., Scott Lively, in which he says he needs money to fight off the Orcs of Mordor. Lively describes himself as "a simple pastor, with no political ambitions or dreams of grandeur," even though he is now making his second attempt to get elected governor, but maybe he's come to terms with how he'll fare in the primary.

CommonWealth summarizes the ACLU-sponsored forum for the five Democratic candidates for DA at Hibernian Hall the other night. You basically have three candidates on the left (Rollins, Carvalho and McAuliffe), one who, if not a right winger, not exactly with any plans to become the next Larry Krasner (current assistant DA Henning) and one who shares some views with the first three and some with Henning.

The Herald reports on Zakim's 55-45 margin, but doesn't mention Marty Walsh's role in convincing Boston delegates to go with the city councilor rather than the incumbent from Brighton. Both Zakim and Galvin will be on the September ballot.

Shamus Moynihan happened to drop by the Dedham Whole Foods this afternoon as independent Senate candidate Shiva Ayyadurai and some minions were outside trying to collect signatures.

People are running away from him like that street scene in Borat.
