Cambridge Police report arresting a local 15-year-old this morning for what they say was a series of incidents Saturday that started with him stealing an unlocked BMW at a Brookline clothing store and ended with him nearly ramming three MIT students - just after he'd stopped near them to ditch the dog that was in the car - police say. MIT News recounts the story of the Roxbury Photographers Training Program, the subject of an exhibit at the MIT Museum.

The studio in the heart of Roxbury included a darkroom and a gallery. Students were well supplied with film and photographic equipment, with support from Polaroid Corporation.

A Cambridge police officer fatally shot a local man police say was advancing on him and other officers with a large knife after leading them on a foot chase for several blocks and after a "less lethal" projectile failed to stop him, Cambridge Police say. Read more.

Cambridge City Councilor Burhan Azeem reports that in the face of campus uproar - as well as lobbying by him and Ari Ofsevit - MIT has decided it won't be locking the public off from as many of its buildings as it had announced a few months ago, and will lower the drawbridges on its libraries and will eventually remove the turnstiles that had blocked non-'Tute access to the fabled Infinite Corridor. Live Boston reports that Boston, state and federal bomb squads swarmed local college campuses this morning to check for the sorts of devices that sent a Northeastern professor to the hospital last night after he opened a hardened case with a bomb inside. Read more.

Robotic lightning bugs

Researchers intrigued by the way fireflies signal each other at night have built robotic analogs the weight of paperclips, MIT News reports.

The tiny artificial muscles that control the robots’ wings emit colored light during flight.

This electroluminescence could enable the robots to communicate with each other. If sent on a search-and-rescue mission into a collapsed building, for instance, a robot that finds survivors could use lights to signal others and call for help.

They did it, of course, for science: MIT News reports physics students who puzzled over why the cream in an Oreo tends to stick to just one wafer when you unscrew it not only developed a device to apply different amounts of force to the unscrewing process but realized they had a good experiment for hands-on rheology: "The study of how a non-Newtonian material flows when twisted, pressed, or otherwise stressed." Ian Cheeseman recounts the story of MIT's Banana Lounge, which has been providing free bananas to the MIT community since 2018.

Thus far, 284,000 bananas have been consumed for the 2021/22 academic year. They get bananas delivered every Monday, Wednesday, and Friday, with ~48 crates each time.
