Charlestown cliche news: Charlestown man admits robbing Charlestown bank, threatening to blow it up

The US Attorney's office reports that Robert H. Brady, 41, pleaded guilty today to robbing the Cambridge Savings Bank in Charlestown on June 28, 2018.

According to prosecutors, Brady went up to a teller and demanded: "Give me everything or I will come back and blow this place up."

The teller gave him a bag with $912 in cash - and a GPS device that quickly led arriving police to him.

Brady faces up to 20 years in federal prison at his sentencing on May 5.

First-time offenders rarely get the maximum sentence allowed under federal law, but Brady is not a first-time offender.

In 2008, a federal judge sentenced him to two years in federal prison for being a felon in possession of a firearm.

In 2010, a federal judge sentenced him to almost four years in prison for once more being a felon in possession of a firearm, after a car chase that ended with Brady running away from Somerville Police, who discovered a bag with a loaded gun in the stolen vehicle Brady was driving. An FBI agent wrote in an affidavit that Brady had been planning to use the car, stolen the day before in Charlestown, rob a bank in Arlington.

And the reason we have all these repeat offenders tying up the court system is because liberal judges won’t impose the maximum penalties on first time offenders, none of which are actually first time offenders at all. That just means it’s the first time they’ve been caught.

Jail Everyone!

He served 4 years which cost the state (as in, you and me) $220,000. ($55k/yr in MA) If he goes back to jail for 10 years it will cost us $550,000. Would you prefer he serve 20 years? 50 years?

Why not just jail everyone convicted of a crime forever. The crime rate will go down and our taxes can rise to 90%.

Actually, it's doubtful that that ever happened; the ruthlessness of English law in the 17th and 18th centuries may have been somewhat mythologized. But the myth gives people like Carmella something to aspire to.
