Man ordered held without bail on charges he opened fire on police as rampaging wound down early Monday

A judge today ordered John Boampong, 37, of Dorchester ordered held bail for up to four months on 21 counts of armed assault with intent to murder for an incident off Arlington Street in the Back Bay early Monday morning, the Suffolk County District Attorney's office reports.

Boampong is charged with firing several rounds at Boston Police officers trying to clear the streets shortly after 3 a.m. on Providence Street, a narrow, one-block long street that runs from Berkeley to Arlington streets, between Boylston Street and St. James Avenue.

He was charged for each of the 21 officers in the general area of where he fired a gun, allegedly out of anger at officers trying to stop him from ramming the car behind his.

Boampong was held under a state law on people who pose a particular danger to society.

He was one of 53 people arrested Sunday night and Monday morning in violence downtown and in the Back Bay and the South End.
