Their falafel was awful.

Who goes to a gyro place to order falafel?

They were good gryos and added a nice option to that little run of restaurants on the block. The gyros provided an excellent, unhealthy counterpoint to the healthier Greek food over at Saloniki, and sometimes that's exactly what you need.

Hopefully whoever replaces them will still serve something with fries, so patrons can sit out front and hand feed tiny fry pieces to the amazingly bold sparrows that live on the roof.

But many years ago, long before the fire on that strip, I was at a greek place along Peterborough having lunch. A pigeon flew into the restaurant and was walking around looking somewhat confused and unsure how to leave.

Customers and employees tried to shoo it toward the door with no luck. The bird was not happy. Finally a man, presumably the cook, came out from behind the counter and like a gentle superhero, calmly picks up the bird from behind, cradles it to the patio, and released it like dove.

I'll never forget that. The guy had a way with birds. Made for a perfect summer afternoon day.

And yes, he immediately washed his hands.

Different place in a different location, next to Thornton's. Name was something like Greek Islands. They had great meat-filled dolma that the gia gia supposedly made every day. The rest of the food was so-so.

They were destroyed by the fire. No insurance.

They were always busy the few times I ate there. Glad the Brighton one will carry on.

That's what killed Swish Shabu a few spots away a couple of years ago. They couldn't agree on a rent for a lease renewal. I used to see the guy who manages the whole block at Thornton's, but I unusually only go to Thornton's for trivia night these days and haven't seen Monty for a while.

I went to LaMei in Coolidge Corner last night. It's good (and has some really weird stuff on the menu that I've never tried), but the portions are way too big for me. The Swish portions were just about right. Plus their default veggie selection was more varied and interesting than the veggie combo at LaMei. NTM that Swish was a lot closer than LaMei is.
