Boston firefighters and police responded to Boomerangs, 716 Centre St. in Jamaica Plain around 7:30 p.m. after workers came into contact with a possibly dangerous substance dropped off as a donation.
Initial reports indicated the material was radioactive, but Victoria Price reports the Boston Fire Department says "hatever was thought to be radioactive was not, completely safe."
Live Boston reports three people were taken to a local hospital for observation.
Police cordoned off the area around the store. The 39 bus was diverted from the area.

a fantastic, high-quality resource for thrifting (no junk on their racks), profits go to AIDS research, and the folks who work there are such lovely people! I have been buying from and donating to their South End outpost from the day it opened.
(And yes, the Gilbert U-238 Atomic Energy Lab was an incredibly dangerous children's toy, but it was no Jarts.)

accepts donations. The hours for drop-offs are slightly narrower (Tue-Sun: 11 AM – 5 PM) than for shopping (Tue-Sun: 11 AM – 6 PM).

Dispatching a helicopter to cover a story like this is a particularly in-your-face example of how late-stage capitalism grossly misallocates resources.
I remember 10-15 years or so ago when a worker fell down a shaft at the Charles Circle T station; it was a particularly challenging rescue because he was at the bottom with 2 broken legs and 2 broken arms, IIRC, and wasn't able to strap himself into a harness for rescue, but the shaft was narrow enough that it was hard to lower a rescuer to him...
I looked at the assembled emergency response vehicles, and at the 2 news helicopters overhead, and realized that we were spending a lot more money on the helicopters than on the rescue itself.
In related news, our ability to be intelligent, informed voters in our participatory democracy is greatly enhanced by live helicopter video of the State House during important legislative votes. /s

The Firm was my first concert as well. After a steady diet of Led Zeppelin in my junior high and early high school years, getting to see Jimmy Page play live was quite an experience.
