Wu backs Pepén over Arroyo in District 5

Mayor Wu is endorsing Enrique Pepén, her former constiuent-services director, over incumbent Ricardo Arroyo in the District 5 (Hyde Park, Roslindale, Mattapan) City Council race in the Sept. 12 preliminary election. Wu had backed Arroyo in previous campaigns - including his run for DA, at least until those allegations surfaced.
In a statement this morning, she said:
Enrique is exactly the kind of leader we need in government. He’s thoughtful and kind, creative and tenacious - and above all dedicated to serving the community. As a resident of District 5, I'm excited to vote for someone who not only knows City Hall inside out, but also has lived the challenges of our community through growing up in Boston and now raising his two young kids here. He’ll be a fantastic partner on the Council with the shared progressive values, determination, and heart for service to make Boston a city for everyone.

Musical Offices
The hold-overs from the Walsh and Janey administrations were shifted over to the community centers department. They are now in management there. This opened the door for Wu to input her choices of Pepen and another hold-over into management at ONS.
To run for office Pepen had to step down due to conflict of interest, so the director of ONS slot remains open.
The 2nd in command is running that show per that web site. Lots of cultural reps now along with neighborhood reps. Hard to tell who you need to talk with or who is in charge. They also lack a rep for the Pastafarian Community. Hey... RMV recognizes them.

I'll vote for Magoo. Magoo will be better than a good amount of what I've seen come out of the city council recently.

I don't see this guy running in the first place without the blessing of the mayor. Same deal as Henry Santana.
Maybe she could have given him a few tips
So that he could avoid multiple ethics violations at the beginning of his campaign.
How does a kid 3 years out of college get a job running the Mayor's Office of Neighborhood Services?
He's not that young
After all, he's married with 2 kids.
Meanwhile, let's not forget that O'Malley first ran for office basically looking like a high schooler. I suppose nowadays he wishes he looked that young.

Very quiet
This shouldn't surprise anyone since she worked for him on the campaign and in City Hall. More important to pay attention to what is happening in the district. Very little attention on this race even with more credible candidates. Not many signs and Jose Ruiz seems to have the most, especially in Hyde Park. Roslindale is quiet so far and the progressive group's members who are most active just endorsed Arroyo again. This will be a low turnout election so anything can happen but it's very quiet and the most active people have mostly stayed with Arroyo it seems or gone to Ruiz so far.
I see the opposite
I mean, it's been pretty quiet, but up the northern end of the district, Pepen signs are more prevalent. I might not be getting as far into Hyde Park as I typically do.
Meanwhile, Arroyo's website lists his dad as the Register of Probate. Wasn't Ricardo invited to the retirement party?

Doesn’t mean what it did a little over a year ago.
This guy isn’t an improvement, he’s just a new clown in our ongoing circus.
Policy
There are 3 challengers to the incumbent, including Pepen. I wish there was more polling info because my main issue is unseating the incumbent. Ruiz has been raising the most, but a Wu endorsement might be enough to vault Pepen to the top. I'm literally over here guessing at who is District 5's top pick, so I can vote for him.
One thing I don't love about Pepen is advocating raising fees on housing developers. That's going to reduce the number of units that get built, but dressed up in "eat the rich" language that plays to the base. That's the kind of mentality I'd like to see leave the the Council along with Arroyo and Lara. Building housing in Boston should be an "All of the above" approach.

Pepen has said some other NIMBY stuff too about needing more parking and not supporting the Roslindale bus lane. It’s a tough spot because Arroyo is the best choice on policy if you care about more housing. He’s been pretty pro-development on new projects. The others just sling NIMBY talking points at forums.
