As a young kid in the late 1970s
Living in that part of JP, there was a lot of crime and violence. Every day people got jumped, beaten up, robbed. I remember when kids from the Curley school rioted down Centre St. Obviously encouraged by adults. One day the neighborhood was flooded with cops, including plain clothes. They told us to stay indoors, and they didn't want a "white backlash". As an adult I now assume city hall was concerned about bad publicity, real estate, etc. Crime violence was a daily occurrence. My mom would send me to the Stop & Shop by the projects and I got jumped multiple times.
