Either the state is getting ready to put Rte. 1 back on its proper path along the Arborway/VFW Parkway or somebody has been inhaling too many paint fumes at the Department of Conservation and Recreation sign shop. How else to explain this sign, which recently went up where Centre Street turns into the VFW Parkway in Roslindale - 19 years after the state decided Rte. 1 was going to go south via 128 North?
Thanks to Bob Ward for the tip.

I thought I saw it somewhere
I knew I wasn't crazy when I said something a few months ago about VFW/Arborway being Route 1.
19 years? I never stopped
19 years? I never stopped thinking of that as Rt 1. Live and learn.
By the way - did you know
By the way - did you know that just beyond the sign in the background is the entrance to the Allendale Woods park? They made the sign nice and small so no one would see it.
Teaser
Route 1 is one messed-up route. After coming across the Tobin, going through the Big Dig, then up 128 (/93/95), it rejoins the road formerly known as Route 1 and then goes back down on its traditional route through Norwood. Whose idea was that? I'm surprised they didn't make Route 9 the Mass Pike.
I think this teaser sign is supposed to mean "this way to Route 1."
It's a really, really weird place to put it though, by the defunct Mobil on Centre street. I can't imagine why anybody would be looking for Route 1 there. It's a long haul down the VFW and the
Dedham StripProvidence Highway to get to... Norwood. It does beg the question, though... if the VFW isn't a state highway, why are the staties always there pulling people over?
Staties and the parkways
They used to be MDC roads, so when the MDC police got assimilated into the State Police, the staties took over jurisdiction. Which is why I was surprised to see a Boston cop doing a speed trap at the VFW/West Roxbury Parkway rotary last weekend.
Who has jurisdiction for this sign?
And if you ever noticed the entire route from Providence Highway to VFW to Arborway to Jamaicaway to Riverway — all still have up the old green signs but a green patch has been put over the #1. Just a patch job to real old outdated signs. I sure would like to know who is responsible for these half ass signs? We need a real new roadway system to direct motorist down the roadway what used to be Route 1. Have you ever tried to give directions to West Roxbury or Roslindale?? If we had a new roadway system named something like Emerald Greenway, or Boston Parkway (comprised of the Riverway, Jamiacaway, Arborway, VFW) it would be much easier to give directions ie; Follow the Boston Parkway to Centre St or to Walter Street. Any suggestions?
the route 1 signs
How do we know the Department of Conservation and Recreation put up this sign? Could it have been Mass Highways? I think they are responsible for the Route 1 signs on Storrow Drive...which may be a different jurisdiction? Can someone tell me?
We need a new signage system to take the place of what was Rt 1

Or why not plain old Route 1A?
In many other places, Route 1A means "the road that used to be Route 1, before it was moved somewhere else".
Right turn
The Arborway continues in a straight line from the Fenway/Jamaicaway on the other side of the Centre St. rotary, and the same road goes right over the bridge to Franklin Park. It's all one big Emerald Necklace.
To get to Rossie / West Rox, you have to go off that continuous route, taking a right either at Centre St. (for most of West Rox.) or Washington St. (for most of Rossie). Jamaicaway - VFW isn't a continuous route at all.
