Why didn't anybody tell me Christo was doing an installation in Downtown Crossing?

Wait, what's that? That's not a Christo installation? It's just the developers trying to mollify an outraged city and protect what's left of the old Filene's buildings after more than a year of leaving them exposed to the elements at the giant hole in the middle of Downtown Crossing?
Oh, never mind.

Apologies -- we thought you knew!
And I still don't understand why Floon doesn't hold every press conference in front of this hole in the ground as a symbol of Menino's tenure.
Great idea!
Great idea!
Where's the Bow?

Protection for our eyes, perhaps
I don't think this is protection for the building from the elements. I think it's protection for our eyes from the building/hole/debacle.
I seem to recall the developer publicly saying that if he could not secure financing to continue construction before October 1 he would take measures to make the site more aesthetically pleasing. Looks like all of this talk about the commercial real estate market going to hell might have something to it.
My question is what is going to go on all of that white? Perhaps nothing, and it's just camouflage for winter?
see it everyday
What a disappointing view for downtown crossing. I see this every single day on my way to work.
Meninoville, Massachusetts
That white sheet is hideous, but emblematic of a city deteriorating from the inside out, and the Urban Mechanic doesn't have any answers.
OK, it's there, what's your point?
The only fault of the mayor in this instance was that he relied on information that funding was coming for this project. It is not his fault, but a situation that is faced all throughout the country as a result of the economic downturn. It's unfortunate that one tries to make this the "legacy" of the Menino administration. What about the improvements to Grove Hall, or Dorchester Ave from Andrew Sq to Ashmont, or the development of the South Boston waterfront? What about Boston becoming one of the most tourist friendly and the 3rd greenest city in the US? No, not willing to accept those facts, friends? It is a very insincere and easy move to nitpick where the international economic meltdown has taken its toll in our city. Fortunately, it is the ONLY tangible effect in Boston, while the city's bond rating and Menino's ability to continue to improve the city landscape and city services provide a firm base for hte city to continue to grow.
Whenever someone posts about
Whenever someone posts about the city's bond rating, you can tell that this is a post from city hall, regardless of the internet address. This guy says the ONLY tangible effect is from this project. Tell that to the people of Allston.
The city let the developers skirt the process
Yes, global financial crisis, frozen credit and all that, but the BRA - the mayor's BRA - ran this project around the vetting process, as they apparently do 10 percent of the time.
I would direct your
I would direct your attention to the open rat-pit that is now Chinatown--and all thanks to Dear Leader Menino. The day that corner was torn down on a whim was the day I realized that Menino has to go because he is no longer accountable to anyone. I think the donwturn is the only thing that has stopped him from making more mistakes such as this and the Filenes rat-pit.

Where's the "Mayor: Thomas
Where's the "Mayor: Thomas A. Menino" text?
That will look fantastic...
What is that tarp going to look like after the first couple nor'easters? Then, pieces of tarp will be swirling around Downtown Crossing along with the McDonald's trash and plastic bags. Something more for the rats to scurry back to their holes with and sure up their encampments.
