Venues not to blame for Molly, LSD overdoses in August, board rules

The Boston Licensing Board ruled today that the House of Blues and the Bank of America Pavilion couldn't have done anything to prevent overdoses at August concerts.

The board ruling came after police detectives testified that they had no evidence that either venue had anything to do with the sale of the drugs consumed by customers at an Aug. 28 Zedd concert at the House of Blues and an Aug. 31 concert by STS 9 at the pavilion. Police added they had evidence the one woman who died, at the Zedd concert, had downed Molly tablets before she even arrived.

Since when has pre-gaming been a legitimate excuse for any bar???

I'm pretty sure that's always met with "then you shouldn't have let them in in the first place!".

It's two Bostons here...

If you're a "venue" and the user DIES due to drugs IN YOUR VENUE, well, you couldn't have known, they came to you already hopped up, whatareyagonnado, fuggedaboutit.

If you're a "bar" and the user FIGHTS due to alcohol ON THE STREET, well, you shoulda stopped them, you let them in already drunk, it's all your fault, shut it down!

What the flying fuck is going on around here?? I don't even necessarily disagree with the decision, I just ask for consistency in policy! I hope every single bar that ends up in front of the board for some bullshit going on outside their establishment points to these police comments and exposes this stupid hypocrisy.

that the bars sell alcohol, while the music venues do not sell Molly.

I agree that it's inconsistent, but I'm going to assume that the liquor license comes with an added responsibility to ensure that drunk patrons, regardless of where they got drunk, do not cause trouble. No one has a license for selling illegal drugs, so they're only obligated to call the cops on drug users as they would anyone else breaking the law.

so your saying venues should sell "Molly" and then take responsibility?

The difference being that in the alcohol case it's pretty easy to tell when someone has had enough. Most people doing LSD or Molly appear totally normal. Do you suggest these venues take a blood sample of everyone who enters? And while a death is tragic, it mostly impacts the person who took the drug, unlike an aggressor drunk on the legal drug picking a fight with others. Not exactly the same situation.

with alcohol, it takes a while to get drunk, so the bar should pay attention to those that are getting progressively drunker. With any drug, one can show up completely sober, carry it in with them, take it in the bathroom, and there really isn't much the bar could do about it.

Go after the dealers stop blaming bars and clubs for moron drug addicts!! Thousands of adults go to these venues every year and have a great night, but because a couple of loser's OD on illegal drugs that they bought outside the club, it should suffer?

I hate to sound insensitive, but maybe the parents of these young adults on drugs should step up and take the blame instead of dumping the blame on the venue that 99% of the adults that attend enjoyed themselves without drugs.

It is a problem, but going after the bars and clubs the served 100's of thousand of people a year without an incident is wrong because a couple of people OD out of the masses, its the venue's fault.

Educate...
