Police superintendent named acting commissioner
Mayor Menino today named Superintendent William Evans as interim police commissioner following Ed Davis's resignation today.
“The Boston Police Department will be in great hands under the leadership of Bill Evans,” Mayor Menino said. “He knows how to manage his team of talented officers, has the respect of the rank and file and has proven his ability to diffuse even the most difficult of public safety situations.”
Commissioner Evans is a 31-year veteran of the Boston Police Department and has held a leadership role within the Department for the past several years. Superintendent Evans has had notable roles in both the successful, peaceful handling of the 70 day occupation of Dewey Square by Occupy Boston and the capture of suspected Boston Marathon bombing terrorist Dzhokhar Tsarnaev.
Evans's brother, Paul, served as Boston police commissioner in the 1990s.

Will new Mayor appoint a new Head of our Boston Public Library?
Will a new Mayor appoint a new Head of our Boston Public Library? Will many department heads, including the Head of our libraries, be asked to step aside next year?
Also of note, see
BPL Professional Staff Association

And ask for "The Real Sheet" newsletters at your local branch public libraries...

How about you stay on topic?
You do realize that the way you present yourself here results in nobody paying any attention to your causes, right?
I dunno
For him, he is actually almost on topic. The question he should be asking is whether all department heads, even the head of the library, will be asked to step aside come January. It was an issue in January 1994, and Curley went out of his way to note that the trustees were his boss.
That's close enuf to on-topic for UH
And his more general point, which ties the article to his specific BPL concerns, is a good one (Admittedly, he probably should have reversed the first two sentences, and added a "For example," to the more specific BPL example). (You, otoh, were just a typical anon, cynically bitchin and moaning and putting someone down without actually adding anything to the conversation.)
Certainly, the timing of this BPD Supt resignation/interim assignment seems like it might make it hard for our next mayor to put forward his own choice without some grousing about excessive change or lack of fairness. Given that Menino seemed to take a perverse pleasure in screwing with our public library system, it's not unreasonable to wonder about what changes we might expect from each of the candidates - at the BPL and other major city departments.

I agree with Sak, there needs
I agree with Sak, there needs to be a top down purge of the Library Board and administration. Also, Bill Evans should do a great job, he was after all a fantastic jazz pianist.
