Atlantic Avenue in front of South Station shut by suspicious bag
By adamg on Tue, 09/16/2014 - 3:49pm
Updated with the outcome.
An unattended bag forced the shutdown of Atlantic Avenue along South Station between roughly 3:40 and 4:10 p.m. - when a bomb technician opened it up and found it filled mostly with papers.
Another view by Mike McD.
Stephanie B captured the moment when the technician opened the bag, determined it was harmless and gave a thumb's up:
She adds:
Looks like some hapless college student forgot their bag.

except for that one time....
except for that one time....
That one time
where there wasn't anytime for anyone to react or do anything before it blew up because no one with ill intent is going to just leave it sitting out there unexploded for hours?
Never heard of a dry run, eh?
Dry runs are SOP for people wanting to do bad things (the smarter ones, anyway).
The wikipedia article only scratches the surface. Do some google searching and you will find it is quite common and a precursor to most "successful" incidents.
You can also think of it this way - like most people, people bent on hurting as many people as possible will take the path of least resistance (in this case, that would be the city that does not have a response like this.)
If you're imagining
If you're imagining terrorists optimizing for police response times, you've probably watched a few too many heist films on Netflix.
You know what it's full of, right?
Someone's underwear after a long weekend in NYC.
Biohazard
Ewww.
Glad to be wrong
... But someone's evening was now spent at FedExKinkos re-creating the presentation materials...
Reason #1,348,453
Why the drunks, druggies, and homeless shouldn't be allowed to permanently claim stake to the benches on Atlantic. 1,000,000% changes the bag belongs to one of the likes.
Sorry teacher
Bomb squad blew up my homework
Question for anyone who
Question for anyone who watched this: does it seem like someone accidentally left the bag behind, or was this intentionally abandoned as a prank?
To those who are deriding BPD's reaction: I think the time when you could just ignore something like this is past. I'm glad that it was nothing, and I hope that's always the case, but we know that's not always how it works out.
Could be a miscommunication
The passenger thought the limo driver grabbed it, but didn't. That sort of thing.

Second picture looks kind of like Boba Fett.
Boba Fett!
I looked up the correct spelling and I never realized his last name was Fett.
But...
His backpack doesn't have jets.
Looks more like a cross
Looks more like a cross between Hawkeye and Outcome 5.
why do they have a guy
checking it? shouldn't they use one of those lil' robots with cameras?
Cue some ninny yammering
Cue some ninny yammering about how this means we've all given up our rights to the police state and turned into sheep in 3...2...
No need to, now
You've fulfilled the ninny-yammering quota for this thread.
Thank heavens we have you
.. as the latest twerp hall purity monitor. Your scoldings are fairly tepid. I know a certain bicyclist who blows you away in that department.
Keep this stunning vigilance tuned to a fine fever pitch as someone is sure to slag Harvard or something and you'll have your big chance to be its toady again.
Here's your theme song courtesy of Mike Watt and the late great D Boone, also too George Hurley. Morning music. Rise and shine.
