Brady Freed VW Bug in Dorchester

Mark Leonard spotted this guy on Rte. 1 today: Stephen Libman of Alliance Glass and Sign in Dorchester.

Perhaps he was on his way to or from the Fleming Printing Company in Porter Square (which Claire Blechman photographed today):

An online petition to NESN to bring Don Orsillo back to announce Sox games next year had more than 20,000 backers as of 5:10 p.m.

Baseball won't be the same without him.

Separately, Saugus residents are organizing on Facebook to save the iconic orange Saugusaur now that the miniature golf course it sits in has been sold to a developer who wants to use the land for a hotel and luxury housing. The page has more than 1,100 likes.

Orange dinosaur

Wicked Local Saugus breaks the news that a developer is buying a miniature golf course and ice-cream stand so he can build a hotel and luxury apartments.

Left open is what he plans to do with the perfectly-toothed dinosaur that is as much a part of the Rte. 1 ambiance as the Ship, the leaning tower of pizza and the Hilltop cactus.

"The fate of the iconic orange dinosaur in Saugus is uncertain," Wicked Local sighs.

UPDATE: Judge Benjamin Barnes ordered D'Amato released on personal recognizance when he's well enough to get out of Mass. General, where he's being treated for his injuries, the DA's office reports. The judge banned him from driving, however. Both his alleged victims are now out of the hospital.

State Police have charged one of their own for a crash this morning on Rte. 1 that sent a cruiser occupied by a State Trooper into the car he had stopped for motor-vehicle violations.

As many as 11 vehicles may have been involved in a rollover-causing crash on Rte. 1 north at Rte. 16 this afternoon, in an incident that might be related to a car hitting several other cars on the Tobin around the same time.

In 2008, the state erected a sign on Centre St. just before the VFW Parkway that sure seemed to indicate Rte. 1 was just around the bend. Now a brand-new "Rte. 1 Jct" sign has gone up on Washington Street southbound in Dedham, just by the mall and just before the rotary with what was once Rte. 1, before the state decided it was very important that Rte. 1 smush with Rte. 128 instead of ambling along the Riverway, Jamaicaway and VFW Parkway.

New Rte. 1?

My husband just called me. He works for a hospital in Boston (not Paul Levy's hospital) and as non-essential personnel he was released at 2:30pm today.

It is now 7:45pm. He just passed Kappy's on Rte 1 North.

Do the math -- 5.25 hours, yes.
But, even more disconcerting is -- Kappy's was closed.

"Think of the amount of booze they COULD BE SELLING to people like me who have spent 5 hours to go less than 10 miles. Think of the revenue! Think of the ... "

Doug was a little upset.

The Globe reports that a tractor trailer hauling garbage overturned at the interchange of Rte. 1 north and I-95 in Peabody during the morning rush hour today, closing the ramp.

Garbage trucks had to be called in to haul off the stuff. What happens if one of them overturns?

RAWR!

Tyrannosaugus Rex looks none the worse for wear after his recent encounter with a dino-tipper.

True, 10-foot long inflatable rats fit right in on Rte. 1 in Saugus, but they are still resulting in gawkablawkkas, since drivers have yet to get used to them, as opposed to orange dinosaurs or fiberglass cows or a leaning tower of pizza.
