New cars coming to Wellington

Miniature Bumblebee spotted a fresh Orange Line car arriving on a flatbed at the Wellington yard this morning, presumably from the new CRRC assembly plant in Springfield.

The two initial test cars, shipped direct from China, have become a familiar sight on the normally unused third Orange Line track north of Boston. The MBTA says it hopes to begin putting the new cars into passenger service starting at year's end.

Signal problems at Wellington are jamming up Orange Line platforms as trains slow to a crawl. David Christopher reports he's at Wellington, where he watched helplessly as two completely full trains pulled in and then left, with no room for anybody to get on.

The MBTA reports the Orange Line is running extra slow because of a train with mechanical issues near Wellington.

New Orange Line cars at Wellington

Roving Uhub photographer Ben Themo spotted a pair of the brand-spanking-new Orange Line cars just chilling on some tracks next to the Orange Line shops at Wellington today. They'll eventually be put through their paces in months and months of testing on the revamped third set of tracks north of Boston before being placed into actual service for long suffering Orange Line riders.

An Orange Line train breathed its last at Wellington and even though workers got it out of sight, it's still causing "moderate" delays, the MBTA reports.

Transit Police held an inbound train at Wellington after somebody at Oak Grove reported four well dressed "Middle Eastern" men with backpacks split up into two groups and got on separate cars there. Service was stopped for about 15 minutes.

Christian reports a police dog went through the train before it resumed service around 8:50 a.m.

Snow at Oak Grove in February

We've had quite enough of this, thank you very much. Feb. photo by Rich.

Starting tonight, the T will be shutting down the Orange Line between Wellington and Oak Grove starting at 8:45 p.m. at night so workers can get the tracks ready for winter - except for Friday and Saturday nights, when service will run as usual.

You may recall that particular stretch of Orange Line proved particularly troublesome in the winter of our discontent. Workers will be installing heaters along the third rail and at switches to prevent the tracks from turning into a glacier again, in a $12.7 million project, MassDOT reports.

Traffic: You don't want to know.

The T: Trains are running, more or less, but slowly, and wheezing under the load of people trying to get to work and the people trying to get to the Patriots parade. Well, except on commuter rail, where the same conditions exist except for all the trains that were canceled on the more exotic lines, such as Fairmount.

Bex inquired this morning about the walkway at the Orange Line station:

Who do I talk to about the spiders in the Wellington catwalk? because OH MY GOD I'VE NEVER RUN SO FAST.

When asked whether the issue was lots of regular spiders or just one mutant refugee from a nuclear experiment gone horribly awry, she replied:

BOTH! Millions of HUGE, hairy, scary spiders. Maybe they're just filming "Arachnaphobia 2" and no one told us?
