Mayor Wu said today the number of people in tents or tarps at Mass and Cass has dropped from 50 to 14, the State House News Service reports. Wu last week announced another attempt to move people out of the area and into temporary housing or treatment.

ISD inspectors will fan out across Mass and Cass today posting notices that the city will start removing all "tents, tarps and other temporary structures" in the area on Nov. 1, Mayor Wu announced today - adding the state has approved Boston's plans to rebuild the Long Island bridge and that the city is now looking for a project-management company to oversee the work, for which the city has already set aside $81 million. The Globe reports City Councilor Tania Fernandes Anderson (Roxbury) had her phone taken during a mugging near Atkinson Street Saturday night as she walked around to get some first-hand Mass and Cass knowledge in advance of considering the mayor's proposal to make it easier to remove tents and other shelters there.

Wu announces new Mass and Cass initiative

Wu announces new initiatives at the Base on Shirley Street.

Mayor Wu and other officials today announced a second drive to rid Mass and Cass of the tents that have sprung up there again - coupled with new programs to get people into transitional housing and to quickly squelch the rise of new encampments elsewhere in the city. Read more.

Although Boston still wants to re-open the Long Island treatment campus and the state is planning a new recovery center at Shattuck Hospital, both are year's away, say Mass and Cass business owners and residents, who today pitched the idea of building a recovery campus at Widett Circle - the isolated collection of food-processing plants off I-93 that few had heard of until the failed 2024 Olympic group wanted to build a giant stadium there.
