Mitt Romney's favorite novel is Battlefield Earth, one of the last works by sci-fi writer turned religious figure L. Ron Hubbard that was later turned into one of the worst movies ever made. A Romney spokesman later clarified that just because he likes the book doesn't mean he's secretly a Scientologist or anything.

So the Big Dig isn't the only part of our transportation infrastructure always on the verge of collapse. A state commission reports roads, highways, public transit, you name it, have fallen billions of dollars behind basic maintenance needs.

A roundup of reactions:

Casey Ross summarizes the lowlights.

Somebody might find this funny, I suppose.

Young MittSo when John Kerry changes his positions on issues, he's a waffler. But when Mitt Romney does it, he's principaled. Or, as some Romney backers put it - the past doesn't matter, all that matters is what he's sincere about right now. In any case, videos making the rounds:

Young, irresponsible Mitt comes out against abortion restrictions, for gay rights.

Older, responsible Mitt rejects everything young, irresponsible Mitt said.

Mitt Romney had Romney Is a Fraud (which got in one last jab yesterday). The Hub Politics boys hope to replicate that for Deval Patrick with Deval Patrick Watch, which declares him unfit to take the oath of office.

Meanwhile, Dems for Romney is not quite what its name would suggest. It's a Blue Mass. Group production.

Writing on the apparently Realpolitikal National Review Online, Ramesh Ponnuru says it shouldn't matter to conservatives whether Our Mitt is lying about his rightwing stances:

Bay Windows calls Romney a big fat liar, comparing what he said about gay right when he ran for U.S. Senate (when he said he'd be a far strong advocate for gay rights than Ted Kennedy) with what he's saying (or not) now.

How you feel about the matter probably depends on whether you're a Democrat or a Republican.

You'd think the Herald would be all over the story of the Beacon Hill flack hack who got a no-heavy-lifting job that will serve mainly to guarantee him a nice state pension. But nooo. And now it's too late because the guy has quit the job. Tsk.

My disclosure's been around long enough to deserve a pension of its own.

Brian McGrory recently admitted publicly that he could not decide if he were a fool or Mitt Romney were a fraud. At issue: $400,000 Romney cut from state funding for homeless shelters.

Now, in the face of a public outcry, Romney has restored the money. And Brian is in love with the governor again:

... What Romney did on Friday when he reversed the cut was something all too rare in public life: He made a difference.

TakeMassAction has photos, video. Kimberly Atkins posts a transcript of Mitt Romney's speech.

Outraged Liberal wonders if the Romney for President campaign will reimburse the state for all the police presence yesterday:

Paul Levy reports that, effective Wednesday, state mental-health hospitals will no longer accept new patients for treatment, due to those budget cuts Gov. Romney made. Levy, who runs Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center, writes:

Beth Israel Deaconess CEO Paul Levy points to his hospital's origins in explaining why he can't wait to see Mitt Romney and his increasingly virulent anti-gay positions leave Massachusetts:

Brian McGrory is flabbergasted that the Occasional Governor would step on the backs of the poor to pick up some more conservative votes in South Carolina:

Either I'm a fool, or our governor is a fraud.

Has nothing to do with his frustration over pinko Hillary-loving reporters and everything to do with what happens after Jan. 2, when local reporters start getting access to Beacon Hill files that might prove embarrassing to the Man Who Would Be President. At least, that's what Seth Gitell, who knows something about the local press (having served as Menino mouthpiece), argues.

Oh, sure, there are those Gloomy Gusses who are barricading their doors against the imminent onslaught of rapists and who fret their taxes will go up so high they won't be able to afford that Porsche they have their eye on. But for most Boston bloggers with an opinion on the elections, it's still party time.

Kimberly Atkins points us to this Republican Governors Association ad complaining about an absentee governor running for president. But ha, ha, no, it's not about Pott Romney (current chairman of the group). It's about Kettle Richardson of New Mexico.
