David Cange first started planning his Fritay Haitian restaurant a couple of years ago. Covid-19 forced a delay, but Cange went before the Boston Licensing Board today to seek a food-serving license at 532 River St. in Mattapan Square.

The family that owns a house turned health-services building at 1525 Blue Hill Ave. has filed plans to replace it with a five-story building with 16 condos and ground-floor commercial space that 5-story, approximately 21,920 sf building containing 16 residential units and ground floor space for the counseling and medical offices to return. Boston Police report arresting Eddie Osborne, 37, of Mattapan, on charges he shot two men inside Mello Vibez, 473 River St. shortly after 11 p.m. on Feb. 19. Read more.

The Boston Licensing Board heard details today of a pair of violent, and likely related, incidents at Macumba Latina, 477 River St. that left a patron with with his right forearm slashed open and a man in the parking lot across the street lying on the ground after getting hit in the head with a baseball bat. Boston Police report arresting Kion Thomas, 44, of Mattapan, on charges he stabbed a man outside the Burger King at 885 Cummins Highway on Oct. 21.

The victim survived. Thomas was arrested today on charges of assault with intent to murder and assault with a dangerous weapon, police say.

Update: Licensing Board found the club had adequate staffing and could not have foreseen the problem, so no violation.

The owners of Macumba Latina on River Street in Mattapan say they have stopped Thursday-night events that were heavily promoted in Brockton following a July incident in which River Street was shut by knots of people throwing punches at each other. Read more.

Acting Mayor Kim Janey announced today that, yes, that free Rte. 28 service she prematurely announced in May is really happening this time. Starts Aug. 29 and runs for three months as a pilot on the entire route, from Mattapan Square to Ruggles via Nubian Square. Read more.

Police investigate fatal crash in Mattapan Square

KMV reports the crash occurred on Blue Hill Avenue approaching the Milton line. The driver in the 1:30 a.m. crash died.

State officials say a final round of inspections today cleared the Blue Hill Avenue stop on the Fairmount Line to open to passengers tomorrow.

The station, about a quarter mile north of Mattapan Square, will have Zone 1A fares, which means riders can get into town for $2.25 one way or $84.50 for a monthly pass.

Transit Police report arresting a Dedham man they say screamed racial epithets at a Route 30 driver and then threw a rock at him, hitting him, after the guy was kicked off the bus for not paying his fare Saturday afternoon.

The Board of Appeals yesterday approved a plan by two community developers for a 135-unit, six-story apartment building - and two townhouses - on what is now an MBTA parking lot at the Mattapan Square T station. Read more.

Kenton Thomas, 32, was arraigned today on a murder charge for the June 1 fatal stabbing of Jocelin Nordeus on River Street in Mattapan Square, the Suffolk County District Attorney's office reports.

Dorchester Municipal Court Judge Jonathan Tynes ordered Thomas held without bail, the DA's office reports.

Boston Police say they're determined to end problems by daytime drinkers congregating outside Mattapan Square liquor stores downing the nips and single cans of beer they've just bought, and are now about a month into a crackdown that they say so far is working. Read more.

Search for Justice-Daniel Bunch

Daniel Bunch's family says there were plenty of witnesses to his fatal shooting at the Mobil gas station on Blue Hill Avenue at Babson Street on Oct. 8, 2011. Now they're hoping that a $10,000 reward will get somebody to talk to investigators and lead them to his murderer.
