Citizen complaint of the day: The mosquito-powered scooter in Jamaica Plain

A peeved citizen files a 311 complaint from Lamartine Street in Jamaica Plain:

Some a-hole w a scooter powered by a hairdryer or a million mosquitos is going down lamartine to new Minton up Amory and back again. It's a nuisance. And I've heard a couple people have to brake sharply for the jerk.

Police want these scooter reports. Call 911.

I'm a little more concerned about the dirt bikes doing the same. And the jagoff with the straight-piped Fiat 500 who loves nothing more than to drive circuits around the neighborhood at full redline.

Wow, so he gets up to 25 mph?

Not that, as a one-time Fiat owner (going way back), I'm bitter or anything ...

The five thousand calls we've made about dirt bikes screaming up and down Lamartine, Boylston, Washington, Walnut Ave, and all parts of Franklin Park that have yielded no response.

I mean, 311 isn't going to do anything about it either, but at least it's some kind of visibility of how common this is on the east side of the Orange Line.

he might be a nice guy with an annoying scooter.

Answer: Because I have never met a "nice guy" who will repeatedly blast his sound crap to a captive audience.

Sorry, humanoid. A nice guy would not drive around the block submitting his neighbors to noise pollution.

I've seen a state cop by the SW Corridor pull over a scooter screamer riding down the bike path. So that was at least one instance where one of the children of some god was at least inconvenienced. I didn't stick around long enough to see whether the scooter was removed. I do know that the child was made to sit around for a while.

I've seen a few of these packs from Hades riding around, including one pipsqueak who was on a tricycle fitted out with a motor and a loud flatulence machine (not to be confused with the fellow reliving his childhood with the much larger automotive trike).

I figure the goal of these children of noise is to let everyone know how "powerful" they are because they can make noise loud enough to wake the dead. What is needed is for the legislature and city council to put some sharp teeth on disturbance of the peace laws and ordinances directed at these vehicles which are used primarily to destroy both any peace and quiet and to intimidate residents by creating dangerous conditions on streets and degrading the neighborhoods with noise.

Boston police regularly say they can not deal with loud vehicles that are riding. It's too dangerous. That is not their choice. That is their job: to keep the peace.

Salem has addressed this problem. So the problem is not impossible to address.

One impediment may be judges. So the city and state need to address noise issues by either funding decibel reading equipment or by either using laws or passing laws that will not need to rely upon decibel measurements.

Has anyone living near Franklin Park heard the boom boom boom that was gracing the area every weekend earlier this summer? Or have these children of the boom box moved on to harass other folks?

Ugly little fat-tired motorbike? Just wondering if it's the same guy I was stuck behind on Boylston last week--it really did sound like he was riding a very whiny lawnmower. I really don't get it--why not just get a real motorcycle? You know, like a big boy?

Sometimes toodling around the city isn't worth it on a motorcycle. I have been contemplating getting a scoot for city riding because my fancy-pants Ducati doesn't like going that slow (and it's not necessarily good for the engine).

The short rides in the city aren't really all that good for some motos.

And defining a scoot vs moto based on one's masculinity? Not cool. And really, makes no sense.

I like scooters. I like motorcycles. And bikes, and even cars sometimes. What I don't like, and I see it all the time, is men acting like complete dickwads on said vehicles--making unnecessary noise to get attention, speeding and driving aggressively, let alone catcalling and yelling. And I see a lot more of this self-aggrandizing crap from guys on dirt bikes, mini bikes, and sometimes scooters than from anyone on a full-sized bike. Again--it's not the choice of vehicle, it's the behavior but I can't help but observe the correlation and draw my own conclusions.

You have to have seen the videos and read the news of idiots on motorcycles blocking traffic in the highway so they can play 'stuntas'.

What you see "all the time" is what's happening in our own little bubble of Boston and some other city environs. What also happens in our little world is the wheelie'ing down straightaways on Ninjas (typically) or other oversized for their rider's skills motorcycle. But apparently you don't see that, so it doesn't happen.

Idiocy takes on all forms and (engine) sizes.
