The Boston Licensing Board yesterday approved a malt and wine license for Quick Pick Convenience, 973 Tremont St.
More than 20 members of United Neighbors of Lower Roxbury packed the board's hearing room Wednesday to support owner Nimesh Rana's plans to replace candy and laundry products that few people are buying with shelves for wine and a cooler for beer.
Rana submitted petitions with more than 700 signatures, both from UNLR members and nearby Northeastern graduate students, in support of his request. The proposal was also supported by the mayor's office.

Because making another reason for people to double park on Tremont "just for a minute" to get their booze is such a great idea. Hollywood Liquors across the street is NOTORIOUS for this.

Yes, some of the soda fountains had a prominently displayed malt dispenser, but it wasn't a very popular item on the menu.
The one time I tried it, I thought the malt tasted like Ovaltine — but a lot worse! The ice cream, syrups and toppings were delicious enough on their own. Adding malt just gave it a funny chemical taste.
Calling the place a "Malt Shop" because one of the items they sell is malt, is like calling a supermarket a "Liver Shop" because one of the items they sell is liver.

We didn't have malt shops (but we did have soda fountains - mmm, nothing like a chocolate egg cream in a paper cone with a side order of pretzel stick). But we did have Malta Goya, which we'd dare each other to get and drink and, oh, man, was that stuff awful! I imagine the youths of New England have a similar reaction to Moxie.

And it's been around for a long time. It's the area roughly between Melnea Cass Boulevard and Mass. Ave. - no matter how many Realtor-brand real-estate agents try to call it the South End.
