Andrea Campbell running for mayor

Andrea Campbell for Mayor

City Councilor Andrea Campbell (Dorchester, Mattapan, Roslindale) announced this morning she is running for mayor in the 2021 elections.

Campbell joins City Councilor Michelle Wu in the race. Mayor Marty Walsh has yet to say whether he will run for re-election.

In an e-mail to supporters this morning, she writes:

The events of this year – the impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic, the national reckoning on systemic racism, the realities of our growing climate crisis – have brought our country and our city to a pivotal moment. Systemic inequities have been brought to light with new urgency, and people are demanding change that ensures our city works for all of us. This moment demands a different type of leadership, and a clear focus on solving generational inequity in this city.

Campbell, a Boston Latin School graduate, was first elected to the council in 2015, defeating long-time incumbent Charles Yancey. She went to Princeton and UCLA School of Law, and served as deputy legal counsel to Gov. Patrick.

Which one of the three candidates will seek endorsements from the different police unions who work in the city.

Campbell is the one in this race who really should be mayor. I think the odds are against her but she has it all. Boston Public Schools, BLS, Princeton and UCLA Law. She’s overcome personal adversity and knows what so many people are dealing with on a personal level. She really is the best of what this city can produce, and would be the first black and female mayor and a powerful example to every kid here of what they can become with hard work and perseverance.

I just had to come over here and...um...er...um...OH YEAH: Make sure to split the progressive vote so that Marty gets another term.

I like both Wu and Campbell, let's hope that Marty is given an unimportant, but important sounding job in a Biden administration so that one of these women gets to be mayor.

They do a preliminary, so both challengers won't be on the ballot splitting the vote in the general election in November. At least that's how it worked in 2013 and 2017.

I'm glad we have three good candidates on tap for the next election, plus I assume Garrison.

no clown candidate this time.

Dougie is not running. He’s working for the New Hampshire Republican Party and is also running MA for the RNC. Check out his Facebook page.

Campbell has less of a shot than Tito did. Unless Walsh decides not to run, then watch his money people get behind Campbell.

isn't always the sole point of running for office

But what's her ulterior motive? It's a lot of work to be running for office for 13 months if you don't even think you can win.

candidates often have special issues that wouldn't be discussed otherwise

Losing makes you unemployed. And yes, a lawyer can get work easier, but long term, what did the candidacies of Maura Hennigan, Peggy Davis Mullen, Sam Yoon, or Tito Jackson get us other than another name on the ballot (which I support whole heartedly.)

She'll do fine.

your backing....

i never get this. "i like her but she has no chance"

"how come the only candidates left are all these people I don't like? Why doesn't anyone good ever run?"

Is there any indication that Walsh is not running for reelection?

People THINK he’ll take a job in the Biden administration. But there isn’t going to be a Biden administration, so I personally assume he’ll run for re-election.

And now with Campbell in the race, she’ll pull votes from Wu. Easy win for Marty.

the thought is that if biden wins and baker is gone, walsh could run for governor

If Biden wins, Walsh might go to DC. I don't see any state-wide office being likely for him.

I think Healey would trounce Walsh in a primary. Walsh isn't good on TV and his leadership of Boston isn't enough to sell him to some voter in Chicopee.

outside of an ambassadorship though i don't know what's in DC for walsh

to vote for Governor. And he'd have to win over a lot more than just the unions. No chance.

I could see the private sector (read: lobbyists) throwing cash at a guy like Walsh if the White House and whole Capitol turn blue.

But we would not know if Baker were gone until after the Mayoral election, he is not going to announce he is not running more than two years out.

I don't think he's going to run and I think he might be preparing for higher office and backing Campbell. Campbell v. Wu might result in a Campbell win because shes from here, is black, and would have Marty's backing.

Its also huge political brownie points (especially in 2020) for Walsh to back Campbell, it'll look good wherever he's going. State or Biden;s cabinet.

I don't see why walsh would stick around. ITs gonna be 4 more belong har dyears and lots of scrutiny. e has to eat ***t daily about Boston's COL, Marty's Mile and its racist reputation. I cant imagine this is the way he wants to end his career and at ~55 now might be the time to make that move.

If he were running, at this point I'd assume he just say that. The fact that he's not tells me there's hesitation. I don't think it's the same as Baker's late announcement in the governors race-because Baker new it was a cakewalk. Nothing about this will be a cakewalk for Marty.

The only wrench here is state office is unlikely due to his very progressive view relative to the rest of the state, his Dorchester residence (a huge stigma for most non-urbanphiles) and his corruption ties.

Walsh and Biden have been tight for a long time and there'd be a place for him in a Biden administration, possibly Secretary of Labor or ambassador to Ireland

I bet that is a hard fought for assignment when administrations switch over. You think the newly unemployed Kennedy might ask for the gig?

I don't see Walsh having the qualifications to oversee the entire Department of Labor. At most he might get appointed as an undersecretary for training, or whatever. Would that be worth giving up his mayoral platform for?

He's trice as qualified as anyone in Trump's bag of losers. How many are in jail now?

What's the over-under on the number of people who will think it's Andrea Cabral running for mayor, and start sending her hate mail?

With Boston largely empty and in ruins, it's not a good look for any two term Mayor, coming off three City Hall corruption trials, to be pinning his hopes on a frail, elderly Biden who probably wouldn't know Walsh if he passed him at the seaport.

My guess is that Walsh has no intention of running but will keep us guessing until the Presidential election is decided, which could be into the New Year. Marty can do more as a lameduck in 2021 with no fear of anything becoming a campaign issue, especially the dream of developing Long Island into a secluded, gated, Hamptons-style resort for his very wealthy donors. There's a reason they didn't pursue a free Long Island Bridge from the Army Corps. It would have required a commitment to house the homeless, plus the future developers want the bridge to be more upscale than what the Army Corps currently offers.

I know this is hard to believe, but as realistic as it looks, that Fallout 4 thing you've seen your grandkid play on the TV is just a video game, not real life.

I wonder what effect Frederick Wiseman's film will have on Walsh's decision. It was a hit at the Venice Film Festival. The Guardian (UK) wrote: "Frederick Wiseman, now 90, gave us City Hall, a four-and-a-half-hour study of the administration of Boston, delving into every conceivable area (housing, road maintenance, animal welfare, celebrations for the Red Sox), and offering a powerful vision of civic values, with enlightened Democrat mayor Martin Walsh flying the flag for compassion and responsibility in the Trump era."
