Car ends up under truck in Brighton crash

Car under a truck

Eileen Houben photographed this car-demolishing crash on Corey Road near Westbourne Terrace shortly before 4:20 p.m. She reports the driver actually seemed to be OK, but firefighters were having to figure out how to get them out.

It's an absolutely essential pass-through for getting from Brighton to Brookline efficiently. But of all the ways I've imagined car crashes to likely happen on it (nearly all of which involve head-on collisions), running into the back of a truck on one of the sections with the clearest sight lines has not been one of them.

That driver had to really be moving and distracted to screw up this badly. But Corey Road of all roads is the last place I'd ever want to be driving distracted. It's too narrow, too hilly, too many crossroads, full of bad parkers, full of potholes, and full of construction projects (on the road, on the houses, on the redevelopments, etc.)...and then just for fun, there's a chicane where the blocks don't line up at Bellvista Road because nobody has ever come back and trued up the intersection properly from the good ol' days.

I used to take it as a shortcut between Brighton and Brookline, as it is _theoretically_ a nice direct route, but it's just too narrow to drive safely other than at a very slow speed, and it's too steep for a bike. Maybe with an e-bike or scooter I might consider it.

As I used to go to Dok Bua often, it was basically the only way to get there and back without a lot of pain (if you go down to Beacon you can't make the left back up Harvard...if you go down Comm Ave, you have added a lot of miles and possibly a lot of traffic and the light at Harvard has risks).
