Animal Rescue League plans new facilities - next to its current South End building

The Animal Rescue League of Boston yesterday filed plans to replace its current two-story South End home with a more modern three-story home right next door.

In a filing with the Boston Planning Department, the non-profit says it would remain open at its current Chandler Street home until the new building is completed, then move into that and tear the current building down.

For the past 70 years, ARL has provided the majority of its services out of its headquarters at 10 Chandler Street in Boston’s South End neighborhood. The current facility is no longer suited to continue the mission and must be replaced. Consistent with current uses on site, the proposed new facility will house an animal shelter with medical and other support services, dog training, and the Boston Veterinary Care clinic (BVC) which is open to the public.

The approximately 30,000 square foot three-story facility will be built adjacent to Tremont Street with an attached single-story dog training space, parking for 25 cars, and outdoor dog runs. In order to provide uninterrupted services to the community, Animal Rescue League will continue to fully operate its shelter and veterinary clinic during construction.

The non-profit hopes to begin 15 to 18 months of construction this coming spring.

Well the era of International Style architecture in Boston is drawing to a close. The ARL building wasn’t a beauty but it certainly reflected the brash bravado of late 1950s early 60s triumphant America

While I fully support ARL's plans here and understand the need for a bigger facility, I've long been a fan of that building (I happened to walk by it a couple of hours ago while on a work-related errand). It'll be a shame to see it go. Other pretty decent International Style/Midcentury Modern in the South End are the Revolution Hotel on Berkeley St and the fire station at 700 Tremont.
