It's the gaiters that make them Old Navy. I can't believe they still wear those things.

It is funny to get lunch at this terrific takeout place called International Pocket Cafe in Middletown RI and see the navy guys come in wearing the blue camo. They look like army guys who washed their unis with 400 Bic pens in their pockets.

I wasn't in when camo-fatigues became the thing to wear everyday. I was a pickle when I served.

Those particular white uniforms are not the current uniform but a special historic one for "Summer Ceremonial Guard". There are also specific uniform specs for those serving on the Constitution: https://www.mynavyhr.navy.mil/References/US-Navy-Uniforms/Uniform-Regula...

The gaiters and belts were safety features for ships of sail. Don't want those flair legs getting caught in the rigging or getting cut by passing ropes at your feet. Need to have a way to hang people off the side in harness and fish them out if they fall overboard.

There is a lot of lore built up over the features of those retro uniforms. The huge button-front placket on the front of the pants = "13 chances to change your mind". The squared-off bibs on the top are so your buddies can easily haul you out of a dank bar or bar fight. And so on ...

This is the current dress white uniform: https://www.mynavyhr.navy.mil/References/US-Navy-Uniforms/Uniform-Regula...
