Interesting name, "DOGE"

I know that DOGE is named for Dogecoin, which is in turn named for a dog.
However, for a thousand years "doge" was the title of the leaders of the Most Serene Republic of Venice, a major maritime power in the Mediterranean Sea in medieval times.
"Doge" derives from "dux", a military title in the late Roman Empire. In standard Italian, it is "duce", a title familiar to historians of twentieth century Italy.

The Doge in Dogecoin was a reference to a joke from Homestarrunner.com. It pains me to no end that such a great website is the distance source of the name for that group of wankers.

It gets its name from something that was supposed to be a spoof of cryptocurrencies, based on a particular shiba inu. But, of course, the times being what they are, it became a real thing (well, as real as any cryptocurrency can be).

The joke coin got it's name from a minor joke in Homestarrunner. (The joke was that a character didn't know how to spell 'dog'.) They took the shiba inu image from a post by a Japanese school teacher of her dog. She didn't know anything about the coin until sometime later.
It was a variant/spoof of the lolcat meme

This protest is dying before it got started. 8 in Boston, 3 in Norwood.
Guess folks aren't heeding the rally calls.

The Boston globe estimated “a few dozen” in Boston. But by the ashen look on the store manager’s face, you’d have thought we numbered in the hundreds. It doesn’t take much more than a single boycott sign outside a showroom to create large discomfort for salespeople and shoppers. Only one shopper entered the store in 3.5 hours on prime Saturday shopping hours. https://www.bostonglobe.com/2025/02/15/metro/tesla-protest-musk-trump/

We had eight in Dedham before I left, plus a reporter from the Dedham Times and the guy in the hoodie and ball cap in this pic, who talked everyone's ear off about right wing conspiracies and may have worked for Tesla.
