Both Boston and Cambridge firefighters responded to the banks of the Charles River around 4:45 p.m. on reports of people walking on the river, roughly in the area of Fairfield Street in the Back Bay.
BFD declared a "tech rescue," which involved sending specialized equipment just in case any of the five people, none of whom appeared to be Jesus, fell into the water.
After apparently walking from Boston towards Cambridge, they turned around and walked back to Boston, where they made their way onto the shore unharmed and undoused. No word if firefighters gave them a stern talking to.
Around 5:30 p.m., firefighters responded to Jamaica Pond, where somebody somehow managed to drive or slide down an embankment onto the pond, where the ice held, so the car's occupants were able to get out and scamper onto shore without finding out if it's true that Jamaica Pond gets wicked deep just offshore. That the car also didn't sink meant firefighters did not have to declare a hazmat situation.
Later in the evening, Boston Police dispatched an officer to M Street near East 2nd Street in South Boston, where a pack of junior-grade ruffians in their early teens thought it would be great fun to hurl ice at passing cars.
Before he could arrive, however, a tough older Southie resident yelled at them to knock that crap off. So chastened, they hurriedly made their way to Broadway before any coppers could arrive.

The only reason I'm glad they didn't fall through the ice: they would have accomplished their goals of getting "likes" and "followers" on social media while risking the lives of first responders and wasting precious emergency resources. Too many young people feel entitled to fame, and not enough feel accountable for their idiotic and reckless behavior.

Why ford the ice?

When safe, walking on the ice gives you an amazing view of things from angles you had not thought about.
Again, When Safe.
There is another way to get those views

It is called a kayak. Or a sailboat. Or a crew shell. You don't get the same windswept austerity that you might on ice, but you can do this most of the year and its legal and safer than what dodgy currents can do for ice thickness in the Charles.
Because it's there
