Dudley to South Station Silver Line service starts Tuesday

The MBTA says new Silver Line 4 service will get riders from Dudley Station to South Station in 30 minutes, with the first, ceremonial, run scheduled for 1 p.m. on Tuesday.

Buses are scheduled for every 10 minutes during rush hour and 15 minutes the rest of the day. T officials say federal stimulus money was used to get the service started.

The existing Dudley-to-Downtown-Crossing service is now SL5. SL3, which served part of the South Boston waterfront, was discontinued.

-The bus lanes are 95% done. Pictures are available on archboston
-The service is in ADDITION to existing silver line buses. So even if not a single person wants to go to south station, washington street customers will still benefit from 33% better frequency
-SL3 was discontinued over a year ago. Its nice that they saved the number if they want to restore service, unlike poor SL4.

It's just 2.5 miles from Dudley Station to South Station.

Welcome to The Suck that is "rapid bus transit".

Consider this: it'd be longer if it were a street trolley like the B Line. I watched a 57 bus IN TRAFFIC beat me from Babcock to Kenmore the other day.

Golden rule: Always take the 57 from kenmore unless there's mid-heavy snow. Itll always win! Always! Going to Harvard Ave-Comm Ave intersection? Still faster to take the 57 to harvard and brighton and walk down the two blocks.

A bus is a bus is a bus no matter what color you paint it or what you call it, unless it has a truly dedicated right of way that has no interaction with the other vehicles and traffic control devices on the road.

Transit does not stand a chance of being rapid in older cities unless it is underground, and even then, as we green liners well know, there are no guarantees.

issacg informs us:

And yet, even then: It is still a bus.

With these bus-like attributes:
1. The low passenger capacity of a bus.
2. The crummy travel time of a bus.
3. The crappy rough, jolting ride of a bus.

Would be neat if they put these service designations on some kind of map or decoder ring they gave to passengers. How the heck is anyone supposed to know where these buses go if they're not on the route maps? Oh, wait, it's too expensive to update the system maps like they never bothered to do on the Ruggles platforms. Urgh.

You missed the big announcement last month. New maps showing the new silver line routes are already in 3 stations.

So when the stimulus money runs out?

They cut light/heavy/commuter rail service and keep the sodding bus.
