Campaign notes: Boston hears Bennett knocking; Globe reveals Menino not ready to retire

Doug Bennett reports he's knocked on his 100,000th Boston door. The next Bennett challenge: Removing the 100,000 stickers he and his supporters have put on light poles and utility boxes.

District 7 Councilor Chuck Turner and challenger Carlos Henriquez debate Wednesday, starting at 6:30 p.m. at the Vine Street Community Center in Roxbury. The main topic: "Does Roxbury matter?" Details.

Blue Mass. Group endorses Flaherty for mayor, in part because "he has created an effective coalition for change in Boston by allying with running mate Sam Yoon," in part because they say the Menino administration is tired and adrift.

The Globe reports Menino wants another term. No, really, they actually wrote a story on that theme (OK, get past that and it's a day in the life of the Menino campaign).

The Menino camp reports their man was endorsed by the Haitian American Political Action Committee because of his "appreciation for the Mayors' commitment and dedication to empower our community through education, job training, housing and business development."

Adrian Walker profiles Tito Jackson, declares "every day is St. Patrick's Day" for the non-Irish city council candidate. Hmm, would that make non-Jewish Bennett an alte knocker? Ed. note: Explanation of that bad Yinglish pun available upon request.

So BMG jumps in the "at least it's not Menino group"

sigh... I feel like progressives are trading the devil we know, for the devil we don't.

on the Cape when he was running for state senate (and lost in a Republican primary). Not the knocking on 100,000 doors - the littering of public utilities with stickers. Funny how voters respond to that kind of thing.

Anybody got a link for the allegation? Doing stuff like that is illegal, right? He and/or anyone else (candidate or volunteer) putting up stickers or posters in like manner should be fined.

Wait he works for Maura Hennigan? Amazing this is the first time I saw that mentioned.

Not only is he unstable, he is a fraud..... In order to knock 100,000 doors...he would need to hit 274 houses a day, everyday for 365 days straight.....LIE !!!!! He is a whack job, and the media should be reporting the truth about him rather than playing along with him....

And I've seen him in action - there aren't a lot of people home in West Roxbury during the day, so he knocks on a door, leaves a flier, moves onto the next door.

If there are 600,000-ish residents of Boston, and the average U.S. household size is 3, then there are probably 200,000-ish occupied units in Boston. And since many of these units are in triple-deckers, brownstones, apartment buildings, etc., there are probably well less than 100,000 front doors to actually knock on.

Alternatively, to knock on 100,000 doors in one year, you need to knock on over 270 doors each day, which really isn't possible.

So either Bennett's been knocking on doors for years (and knocking on some more than once), or he's just making this up.

He's been to my house at least twice over the last couple of years. But who knows how he counted or if his number is accurate.

I saw him the other day & asked if all his friends would be calling again. He promised there would be no more phone calls & asked if I'd vote for him if his friends stopped calling.

As tempted as I might be to say "yes", I can't. Thanks to Mr. Bennett's phone-harrasment, I actually bothered to figure out how to block specific phone numbers from calling me. He is curretnly the only one on the list.

The 2000 census counted 250,000 housing units in the City of Boston.

But the question regards how many of those units have accessible front doors for Mr. Bennett's knuckles to rap.

Knocking on a single access door for a 6-unit apartment building got him the exact same response that knocking on all 6 separately would have. He should totally get credit for all 6.

The Globe columnist is Adrian Walker, not Adrian Jackson.

Fixed, thanks.

regardless of the actual number of doors he has knocked on I give him a tremendous amount of credit for going out there and doing it. He seems like he'd be a breath of fresh air on a council with more than its share of loonies like Arroyo and Turner

The local political pundits seem to hate him. Maybe that is a good thing?

On the other hand he is showing a true lack of organization by just walking up and down empty streets knocking on doors. He gets points for going out there and trying to meet people but is obviously showing that he is trying to run this like he is back in Nantucket.

Here's a simple equation for you. Take the number of votes that Doug Bennett got on Sept. 22nd. Then divide that number by the number of doors that Doug Bennett claims to have knocked on.

Multiply the resulting number by one hundred, and that will give you the percentage of people Bennett contacted with his door-to-door campaign that were actually persuaded by it. Not very impressive, is it?

If you have to knock on 75,000 doors to get 10,000 votes (realizing that each door can and often does represent two or more voters), then you're doing something wrong.

So, if his name was Adrian Hernandez would he only be profiling Felix Arroyo and Tony Gonzalez?

...than to post on blogs and remove all doubt.

Adrian Walker did profile Felix Arroyo. It was a nice piece. There's this thing called "Google"...

Tony Gonzalez is an all-pro tight end. Tomas Gonzalez is running for city council.

RIGHT, THAT'S EXACTLY WHAT I'M SAYIN'. UNBELIEVABLE, RIGHT?

I also give credit to Bennett for getting out there on the streets. I know he didn't knock on every door, but he definitely dropped lit at every doorstop.

As for having knowledge of the issues or the city, he is way out of his league. For the next few years he should just live and learn about the city. Get a job, join some neighborhood organizations and learn about how the city really works. His tired rhetoric is that of all republicans, less taxes, better schools, bla bla bla... This job requires someone who can speak to the needs of every neighborhood. He does not understand the issues in any of Boston's neighborhoods. He is not running for president or senate...this is for a person who knows Boston's neighborhoods. Someone who has grown up here, educated here, worked on city issues here, and been educated here. The current candidates that fit that mold are Felix Arroyo, Tomas Gonzalez, and Andrew Kenneally.

I give him credit, but he is way out of his league.

Well it is not fair to say someone must be a townie to be a City Councilor. Your excluding anyone without the foresight to be born in Boston. I do understand the overall point though, that being here for a few years is different from being around for 10 or more years.

that I have a hard time respecting the opinions of people who insist on using "your" when they mean "you're." Seriously dude; you seem smart enough and educated enough to know better.
