Marching for libraries
By adamg on Sun, 03/28/2010 - 1:51pm
Supporters of BPL branch libraries marched to protest possible library closings today outside the main branch in Copley Square.
The march ended with a walk through the old and new wings of the library.

Thanks for everyone who came!
Councilors Turner and Arroyo were there, as well as a gentleman from South Boston running for State Rep named Jake.
This is so dishonest by the Trustees and the Mayor to the point of absurdity. They are proposing to cut 10 libraries for the lack of 3.6 million dollars. Meanwhile, because of our warm winter we have only spent 7.5 million dollars of our 15 million dollar budget for plowing.
let's all pray for no more snow, and maybe we can have an honest discussion about the future of libraries in the city after we use that 'found' money to get through another year.
There is nothing wrong with having an honest decision about the future of the libary system, saying it is because of a fiscal crisis is a lie, and the Citizens of Boston should demand better from their officials.

did menino break his knee or his brain?
An honest debate requires that the President of the BPL explain her reasons for closing branch libraries. Reasons can be discussed and debated on the merits.
The idea that you can close neighborhood libraries and still have them accessible to kids, whose educations we are concerned about (and for good reason) is absurd.
The idea that you can close neighborhood libraries and still have the neighborhood be just as appealing to home buyers is absurd. Home buyers want a community replete with a fine public library.
Menino is a phony for fronting the charade that blames library closings on budget cuts. Which Boston neighborhood want their 2-12 year old kids growing up without a local library?
What does it say about a president of the BPL, the first public library in the United States, and Mayor menino that they would throw away the sue of ten libraries that were built up for good reason before they were hired to lead the organization?

You can't go back and edit your post to make it comprehensible.
You know a great way to raise
You know a great way to raise funds for libraries? Street parking. I was in San Francisco last week, and street parking was $3.50 per hour near chinatown. Boston is still at $1 per hour? It's like a an opportunity money drain, sucking our opportunity tax dollars away.
but insist on credit card payments
Agreed, but only if you insist on a credit card payment/receipt-on-the-window-format. That way we don't sit around like idiots pumping 12 or 14 quarters into a meter, and you don't have to pay people (often a lot of money) to empty them.
Read Boston Finance Commission Reports about our libraries!
Read the Boston Finance Commission Report on our Boston Public Libraries Department. Appointees to the Boston Finance Commission need to put their Reports online, on the web rather than having the public figure out dates and ask one by one for these public Reports by email at matt.cahill at cityofboston.gov

Spelling
I'm quite impressed that all the signs had correct spelling. Unlike many of the protest signs I have seen in the news lately.
