Tom Brady was in a two-car accident this morning at Comm. Ave. and Gloucester Street. Channel 7 has some video which seems to show that the front of Brady's Audi hit the right side of a mini-van. The Globe reports fire crews had to use the Jaws of Life to extricate a man from the rear of the mini-van. Dennis and Callahan report the quarterback refused a trip to the ER.
Photo of Brady on the phone after the accident.
Channel 4 reports:
A spokesperson for Mayor Tom Menino confirmed to WBZ Radio that Brady was in an accident.
Ed. cranky media note: God! Which is worse: That a reporter would immediately think to call the mayor's press secretary about Brady's car accident or that she would immediately know the answer? Does BPD have some sort of protocol for informing the mayor whenever a local celebrity is in a car accident? Also, while it's nice Brady survived, what about the guy who had to be peeled out of the other vehicle?

They just had another update on WHDH confirming that he didn't go to B&W after all.
From the video, it looks like his black Bentley had front end damage and the other car was a red station wagon that had rear end damage. The majority of the damage was on the red station wagon and the Jaws had to be used on the station wagon, not the Bentley, from what I could see.

New video. Audi with NJ plates.
WHDH talking to Joe Amorosino. Brady had the green. Other car was a minivan that blew through a red. Brady moved forward and t-boned the red car in the side. Other car's driver sounds to be in worse shape than Brady.

If it would have been anyone else (except a well connected politician) driving around with out of state plates, we'd have a hefty fee to pay and a lot of 'splaining to do. But Brady, who can afford to register in state, well...he doesn't need to follow the rules, he's a celebrity!

He may also have his "home of record" in New Jersey, if he doesn't live in MA most of the time - a common practice with professional athletes. Just because he owns property here doesn't mean that it is his official primary residence.
I hardly think he would license in NJ instead of MA to avoid insurance and taxes.
Why he wouldn't have his home of record in Nebraska for tax reasons, I don't know ...

If the car is garaged in MA for more than seven days, I believe he needs to get it registered in state and pay state insurance rates. Isn't that the law?

I'm pretty impressed that his car made mincemeat of the car that ran the red light in front of him and he walked away seemingly unhurt.
But, no, QBs shouldn't be throwing blocks like that.
no "Garage Rule" in massachusetts?
By Sarcastic Sam
Thu, 09/09/2010 - 11:15am
Many states (I thought) had a 'garage rule' for jurisdiction for insurance, registration, or in our case, Excise tax revenue. I *thought*--couldn't find proof with a quick search, where the car is regularly "garaged" is where the car needed to be registered.

Atypical Arrangement?
By SwirlyGrrl
Thu, 09/09/2010 - 11:37am
It may not fall under any garage rules if it is a situation where he gets to drive promotional cars because the automaker knows he gets photographed a lot.
In other words, he may be getting a car to use for a period of time and then gets another car in a few months ... without ever owning these cars.
If you borrow your brother's car for the summer while he's out of the country or your sister's car while she's in basic training, you don't have to register it in MA. The threshold used to be six months.

Channel 7 reports the car was a loaner from a New Jersey dealer, not Brady's, so if that's Sen. Kerry on line two, you can tell him thanks, but no thanks.

That's an Audi A8 (could possibly be the upcoming refreshed S8, which is the sporty variant of the A8) - so the top-of-the-line luxury sedan from the company. Powerful, all the latest tech.
It's gotta be a manufacturer-registered plate: Audi NA must have imported it via there, or has corp. offices there, so they registered it there and I assume he has a deal with them.
The minivan looks like a Mercury Villager (really a Nissan Quest, but a rebadge due to joint venture between Ford and Nissan in the 90s).

Wouldn't the Mayor's office normally be notified when streets need to be shut down so that nobody is on the road at the same time as Tom Brady as he drives from Back Bay to Foxborough for practice?
It seems to me that the real story here is the lack of a police detail that led to the minivan even getting within 2 blocks of Brady's Audi at that time of the morning.

It's a good thing it wasn't a BIKE that ran the red light!!!
By The Beer Guy
Fri, 09/10/2010 - 10:34am
On one of the many recent bicyclist threads on here, someone said that bicyclists should be licensed, have their bikes registered, etc etc. They argued that motorists have their licensed revoked if they commit too many infractions. Clearly the driver in this case nullifies that argument. Has his license still, even though he has a DUI.
great point!

I love how the car people in Boston are always whining about bicyclists in Boston not following traffic laws, as if Boston drivers follow the law. Ever seen a car actually stop at the stop line at a stop sign? Me neither, they either roll through or park themselves in the crosswalk if there is a vehicle in their way.
Double parking? Why not, its not like the city does any enforcement?
Signaling? No way, that's too hard because their other hand is on a cell phone.

Loser driver runs red light, lives to drive another day - in MA at least.
Loser cyclist pulls this stunt and I think the penalty would have been rather immediate and terminal - if the front end of that Audi is any indication.
