Lynch, D'Alessandro to have slightly longer debate tonight
By adamg on Thu, 09/09/2010 - 1:40pm
Channel 2's "Greater Boston" will air a debate between 9th District incumbent Steve Lynch and Democratic challenger Mac D'Alessandro at 7 p.m. tonight (the debate will be taped at 4:30). Greater Boston airs for 30 minutes, so that would make this twice as long as their earlier debate.

Not a Debate
Adam--
When Mac appeared at the Ward 5 Democratic Committee meeting Tuesday, he mentioned that the broadcast tonight is not a debate, merely just the two candidates appearing one-on-one with the show host.
Things might have changed since Tuesday. Mac certainly would like to debate Congressman Lynch. He mentioned there also might be a NECN debate this weekend, but his campaign had not heard back from Congressman Lynch on the details.

P.S. The committee formally endorsed Mac later in the evening!
What I got from WGBH
The Great Debate
Well it's good ol' Auntie Em' so we can guess that even if the candidates were told they'd be feeding soup to crippled orphans, she'd try to get them to engage in a food fight. Probably goad Lynch by making disparaging comments about Southie and Dorchester "Does anyone really go there...? I mean really!"
I think it is insulting and
I think it is insulting and absurd to refer to Emily Rooney as "Auntie" anything. She is a respected and professional journalist, not your or anyone's old "Auntie". All the sour graping from everyone on this site who thinks that tapping the keyboard and posting things on the internets and their endless blogs is the same as the job that Emily Rooney does every day on her very good show is sadly deluded.

Journalism has nothing to do with it
As a recovering professional journalist myself (granted, not at the level of an Emily Rooney), I find myself getting annoyed at her for reasons that have nothing at all to do with journalism, like the way she insults entire neighborhoods and blogs and stuff. Well, OK, yes and sometimes for her journalism, like devoting lots of air time to Balloon Boy on a show called "Greater Boston."
Buck up, little trooper!
"Not at the level of Emily Rooney"?
Don't be so down on yourself Adam-- there's still time! Didn't you say you have some powerful relatives? I'm sure somebody could arrange for you to have a cup of coffee in New York, fail spectacularly, and get exiled back to the hinterlands (here) and construct yourself a bully pulpit to heap abuse on people.
Or you could just skip the trip to New York and... ah, forget it.
I left New York
I'm surprised you don't already have that in your dossier.
grammar police
'abuse on'...?? Drop the 'on' and you'll be just fine, anon sir.
grammar question
Doesn't heap require a preposition and isn't it usually 'on'? If you drop 'on' it's:
...construct yourself a bully pulpit to heap abuse people.
I'm confused...and illiterate.
(Of course drop the 'on' and it's less of Phil Collins' annoying voice on that Genesis song.)
Neeeed a little decaf...?
I don't pretend to be a journalist, blogger variety or traditionalist. I'm not even much of a critic, just a wise-ass for the most part. There's already been a discussion about Emily Rooney's interviewing style and feigned obliviousness about Dorchester. Finding that comment "absurd" is sort of the point...
Perhaps you should follow Dr. Welby's prescription.
I suppose I see your point.
I suppose I see your point. I guess I was kind of just waiting around until someone else took a pot-shot at Emily Rooney so I could attack. I think the quirks of her interviewing style are rather endearing. But really, "auntie" whatever directed at any lady of middle-age (who is not your auntie) is always disparaging and unkind. Maybe absurd too.

Sacred Cow
I'm sure we could come up with a few suitable names if you want to elevate Rooney to the status of Sacred Cow.
Judy Garland
Actually I hadn't intended the "Auntie" handle to be a swipe at her age or sex (or combination thereof). I more had Judy Garland's voice in my head "Auntie Em! Auntie Em!" One of the many voices in there clamoring for my attention.
I listen to her on the radio and watch her show with regularity (she has that effect on me) so what more can a broadcast professional ask for?
Hey at least I'm nicer than the guys on WEEI.
Sepulchral Set
Just before "Greater Boston" went on vacay in the midst of its latest begathon, Emily said that viewers should expect some changes when it came back. Well, they've removed every vestige of a set, leaving nothing but intergalactic blackness all around, and dim light on the host and guests. It's "Charlie Rose" with less wattage.
15 minutes...
Saw the show tonight.
The debate lasted about 15 minutes, maybe 20 at most. D'Alessandro & Lynch were only the 1st segment of the show.
Ridiculous - and frankly, insulting - that Lynch isn't willing to debate his opponent for more than 15-20 minutes -- and only twice at that.

The segment is up online. Go Mac.
