New Jamaicaway crossing at Jamaica Pond

The new Jamaicaway crossing at Jamaica Pond is making progress with all the curbing installed. Now you can see how it's going to look when completed.

We'll be watching for the crossing lights next.

Do contractors get a bonus for making the cut in the median as narrow as legally allowed? Heavens forbid two people try to walk together

I was wondering the same thing.

So two strollers or wheelchairs would have to go single file. But most ambulatory people I know are capable of stepping up a 4" curb while walking side by side.

I'm just glad they've finally gotten around to putting it in. Last twenty years I've thought it was a tragedy waiting to happen with all the jaywalking that happens at that spot.

Fwiw, the dimensions of the cuts/islands seem very similar to the ones at Fallon Field and Belgrade/Robert in Rosi Village. Those seem to work ok.

It seems like the trend in the city for the last couple years has been to put in more ped crossings/lights - I hope that continues. For example, the ones along ALH were such a good idea, and there's now a couple new ones along that looong stretch of Washington between Forest Hills and Adams Park (but they probably should have put in a few more!)

What you expected a PARKWAY to be for people to access to a PARK and not functionally be a highway? Any larger of a crosswalk with curb cuts and motorists might have to slow down from 60mph and pay attention to driving instead of texting.

This is Boston; look at the much touted R.K. Greenway: a six lane highway with the world's most expensive median strip. The sterotypical Herald commenters would be proud!

Let's hope the traffic lights have functioning buttons which make the light change right away. If the light is pretimed, it will be a big waste of time for pedestrians and drivers alike.

We never needed this when we were kids... we either took our life into our own hands or god forbid walked to the crossing area. I am sure the ppl that complained about no crosswalk at eliot will also be the ppl that complain when the traffic starts backing up.

they only knock a pre-determined amount of time off the cycle. Ditto for Perkins/J-way. Those crossings still seem to function effectively.

are you sure? For some reason I have it in my memory that the button triggers it immediately, so long as it has been on "don't walk" for a certain amount of time. Maybe it sets to this after a certain time? Also maybe I'm remembering wrong.

I do love playing god at the crosswalks near the monument or the fire station.

At J-way and Pond I find that motorists tend to run that red light more than others, I wonder if this new crosswalk will hurt or help that.

The light button in front of the church always makes me feel like I'm getting divine intervention. I have a hard time not saying "pow" whenever I press it.

For those of us who have to travel down Eliot St. to get home, this is probably going to be a disaster.
Getting down Eliot from the J-way while the work is going on has been problematic.

Does anyone else have a problem with all the truck traffic on the J-way and Arborway? Large trucks seem to use these roads with impunity and there are never any police to stop them. A concerted effort to stop trucks from using the parkways for a short period of time once in a while would help alleviate the problem.

i will piggyback on here to give credit where due to the Staties who were gunning near the Route 9 overpass this past saturday-- cars consistently fly through there at 45mph+, I hope they earned some revenue that day.

Would it really be better to have the trucks on congested commercial streets?
